We always love to explore our reading and writing progress at St Anthony's but the third area of the English Curriculum can sometimes get a little less publicity!
Speaking and Listening is an overarching skill that involves the ability of students to process what is being said to them but also manage their own speech. As the Victorian Curriculum states:
Speaking and Listening refers to the various formal and informal ways oral language is used to convey and receive meaning. It involves the development and demonstration of knowledge about the appropriate oral language for particular audiences and occasions, including body language and voice. It also involves the development of active-listening strategies and an understanding of the conventions of different spoken texts.Keeping this in mind we were able to plan an incursion this term that allowed our Years 3 to 6 students to practice both their speaking skills as well as reflect on our Integrated concept of Media Arts!
Radio Awareness for Kids
John Broughton has worked in radio for over 30 years and brought his Radio Awareness for Kids (RAK) to our school! John spoke to groups of our students about the different segments you may find on a radio show, as well as how important it is to plan what you would like to say and speak clearly!
After some planning time, each of our groups recorded their very own radio show! John edited these on the spot to include relevant sound effects! We may have some budding radio hosts amongst our middle and senior school students! Please enjoy some of the sports reports, songs, jokes and more on our radio shows below!
