Resilient Families

At Fairhills this year we are introducing a series of programs that aim to build better family and school connectedness. Resilient families is one such program.  It is a school-based prevention program designed to help students and parents develop knowledge, skills and support networks to promote health and well-being. The program is designed to build connectedness within the family as well as improve social support between different families and between families and our school. It hopes to promote social, emotional and academic resilience and to prevent health and social problems in youth.  We hope that preventative work in the early high school years will lead to better student outcomes.

Currently, every Year 7 student is involved in this program during their PE/Health sessions.  The students will receive a series of 10 lessons that cover such topics as: communication, responsibilities and rules in the family, conflict resolution, problem solving and emotional management strategies.

In early Term 3, we will host an evening of fun and information run by Resilient Families and the Year 7 students themselves.  The evening will give parents the opportunity to engage with their student and their learning in a fun but informative way.  We will be sending an invitation to this evening very soon and we would love to see you there to support this innovative Program.

Rotary

Interact Clubs are Rotary International’s service club for young people ages 12 to 18. Interact clubs are sponsored by individual Rotary clubs, which provide support and guidance, but they are self-governing and self-supporting. This year, Fairhills has been invited to begin an Interact Club, sponsored by Ferntree Gully Rotary.

Each year, our Interact club must complete at least two community service projects, one of which serves the local community and another which serves an international community. Currently, the group of students are deciding on what local project they would like to support. Ideas they have put forward are (homelessness, family violence).  Our international project will be raising money for a building project in northern Thailand.  The 10 students who are embarking on a Community Service Tour will take part in the building of a school for refugees from Mynamar.

Interact aims to:

  • Develop leadership skills and personal integrity
  • Demonstrate helpfulness and respect for others
  • Understand the value of individual responsibility and hard work
  • Advance international understanding and goodwill
  • Build relationships with the local and international community.

We want to invite as many students as possible to come along and become involved in the school and wider community.  We meet every second Thursday in C3A and look forward to seeing students there.
