CERES Excursion
Cath Thomas, Year 3 Teacher
Last Friday, Year 3 students embarked on an excursion to CERES Environmental Park as part of their Sustainability unit. During the excursion, students were exposed to the impact that the food waste epidemic is having on our world, and they began to workshop solutions to the problem.
Whilst examining the different types of waste that exist, the students were shocked to discover how long it takes common pieces of packaging, rubbish and other household items to break down in the environment. Some items can take thousands of years! The instructor encouraged the students to recycle their belongings, reusing items when possible.
Whilst our students have learnt about recycling at School, they were intrigued to learn about paper fibres, types of paper and the paper recycling process. Part of this process was some hands-on learning, whereby the students made their very own piece of recycled paper.
To finish our excursion, the students walked along Merri Creek, investigating ways that litter is removed from our waterways.
Australian Mathematics Competition
Helen Cole, Academic Dean of Mathematics
In early August, 107 students from Years 7-12 participated in the 75-minute Australian Mathematics Competition. Kilvington received an impressive 50 Credits, 31 Distinctions and 6 High Distinctions.
Special congratulations to the High Distinction winners: Jude Teo, Darcy Donohue, Alexia Le, Noah Emons, Luc Mascitti and Yestin Fang. They were in the top 3% of their particular year level.
Debating News
Kilvington had a great night at the DAV Octo-finals last Wednesday night. Our D Grade Team consisting of Year 9 students Melissa Deacon, Sophi Gardiner and Lolly Seligmann debated strongly against Melbourne High and were narrowly defeated. Their arguments and teamwork were wonderful to witness and we congratulate all team members on achieving a ranking within the top 16 D Grade Debating Teams in Victoria.
B Grade Team
Our B Grade Team consisting of Year 11 students Cassidy Lyovic, William Douglas and Luke Kiosoglous presented an exceptional line of argument supporting the proposition ‘That we regret the Australian media’s focus on domestic news over international news’, and were declared the winner of the debate.
Congratulations to William Douglas who was named Best Speaker. Our B Grade team will now debate in the Quarter Finals in October and have qualified as one of the top 8 B Grade teams, from over 400 teams, in Victoria.
Years 7 & 8 Teams
It has also been wonderful to see our Year 7 and 8 students finding their debating feet in the DAV competition space. Kilvington currently has two teams participating in the training and debating program held across Terms 3 and 4. Our team members include: Maria Wang, Ruby Wilson, Teagan Strachan, Luis Ballester, Michael Li and Sahil Mendiratta. All students are enjoying the opportunity to showcase their growing skills and refine how they can best tackle matter, method and manner within a high quality debate. Well done to these students and good luck with your upcoming debate in Term 4!
House Debating
A little closer to home, after many engaging and impressive debates our House Debating Competition for 2019 has now wrapped up. Congratulations to the Middle School (Years 7/8/9) Barrett Team and the Senior School (Years 10/11/12) Fysh Team for winning the 2019 Kilvington House Debating Competition. Thank you to all students, House Deans and staff who assisted in making this competition so successful.
