Secondary 11-12

SDR

Students from SDR attend Bunnings in South Morang every Monday to work in the BBQ tent and organise the sausage sizzle. We use this program as part of the Work Skills program to assist our students with skills such as communication, organisation, working as a team and keeping a safe work environment. We would love to see any parents and families from the school when we are there.

Environmental Studies

The Environmental Studies students have been focusing on endangered animals this term. The student’s favourite excursion was heading to the Dingo Discovery Foundation. The Dingo Foundation has been set up to help educate others on community attitudes toward the protection of dingoes. Students listened to a one hour talk on the importance and beneficial role of dingoes in our eco system. An adult dingo was shown to the students to demonstrate their abilities. The students then formed a circle and got the opportunity to hold 6 week old dingo puppies. This is designed to help the dingo socialise with humans. All of the students got to hold and feed the 6 week old puppies.

Numeracy Carnival Day

This semester in our year 11 and 12 numeracy class we have been working on a Carnival Day for the school. Our students have been working together in small groups to design and create their own carnival games. Some of the games include Mini Golf, Knock-a-Tooth, Balloon Pop and Dice car racing. We have also been working on our time and money skills, which the students will require on the day.

The Carnival Day is on Monday 12th September.

Canteen News

Students this semester learned about OH &S issues and responsibilities, before the canteen started. They also used online OH&S programs to extend their knowledge of hospitality workplaces.

The many jobs and skills needed to run the school canteen provides our students with chances to show competencies in the VCAL Work Related Skills Unit and to experience a “real” work situation at school. Everything at canteen is hands-on, so it is perfect for VCAL students.

Jobs include; setting up work stations, preparing food items, reading and completing orders, hot foods, frozen foods, cleaning, delivery of orders, keeping to health regulations such as taking oven and fridge temperatures. Our students have to learn a lot of things in a hurry, so the canteen can function effectively! The group this semester are improving their skills each week.

Presentation Ball

After 10 weeks of lessons for dancing, walking like ladies and gentlemen and conquering stage fright, the big night finally arrived and the year 12 students were excited.  As the limos pulled up to the venue, we were all amazed at how beautiful the girls looked in their gowns and how handsome the boys were in their suits. Their beaming faces were our reward for all the work put into preparing for the ball. In between photo shoots and the final dance rehearsal, Dylan entertained us with his DJ skills and the students danced around the hall having fun. When the guests arrived, it was time for the formal part of the evening. Everyone was so proud of the young ladies and gentlemen, as they descended the stairs to be presented to Jason and Kirrily. The couples danced beautifully together in the ballroom dance and then the teachers joined the students for a fun modern dance. It was a brilliant night and everyone had a lot of fun. Well done to the students who participated.

'Engaging Parents in Career Conversations.'

Last Tuesday evening at Concord School we had an informal, interactive evening discussing a parent’s role in helping their son or daughter with their career planning.  We looked at the changing world of work and the many challenges and opportunities.

The evening began with some delicious sandwiches and snacks and some treats from the cappuccino wagon.  We then gathered in a large circle and did some introductory ice breaker activities.

The stars of the show were our STAR panel – past students who exited from 1 to 6 years ago.  They all arrived from their work / study or training places to tell us about what they are up to and what their feelings were half way through year 12 compared to what they are now.

Their parents dropped in also to help tell their part of the journey.  Their stories were wonderful and everyone was overjoyed to see how much these young people had developed and achieved.  We always knew they would do well but they exceeded our expectations.

Our parents left feeling informed and encouraged about their son or daughter’s future.
