Interschool Sport Wrap Up

Hilary Gilbert

Head of Learning - Health & Physical Education

Term 3 was another hectic time for Brunswick Secondary College. We saw many outstanding results both for teams and individual sports in our interschool competitions, which is a credit to our growing sporting culture and to the enthusiastic commitment from both students and staff.

Although results are always good to celebrate, we also acknowledge that participation numbers  for the Interschool Sport days are definitely on the rise, which is fabulous. During Term 3 we had a record number of students representing Brunswick Secondary College and it was fantastic to see so many students wanting to participate, enjoying the experience and giving their very best to the competition.  These students have acted as fabulous ambassadors for BSC  and we look forward to an ever-growing number of students representing the college at future sporting competitions.

Following are just some of the results/achievements from Terms 3 and 4.

State Level

  • Cross County:  We congratulate Curtis Powell (Year 7) and Polly Stokes (Year 9) who achieved 27th and 66th place respectively. in the  Statewide Cross Country Competition.
  • Soccer:  Congratulations to George Wheeder (Year 7) who has been selected to participate in the the School Sport Victoria Under 12 State Team - representing some of the 'world game talent' from our school
  • Athletics: Congratulations to Jannik Ernst  (Year  9) who continues to do very well in athletics.   Jannik took out first place  athe  regional level in Under 15 boys 800m and went on to represent BSC at the Sport Schools Victoria  State Athletics Championships held on  October 18 at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park.  Jannik ran a personal best time of 2.09.40 minutes at the state final to finish in third place in the Under15 Boys 800m.

This was a fantastic achievement and is the college's  first placing at State Level in a number of years. Jannik is a hard-working student who consistently represents the school with excellent sportsmanship; the BSC community are  justifiably proud of both his result and his attitude to his athletics interest.

Northern Metropolitan Regional Level

  • AFL:  The  Year 7 Boys  AFL team played valiantly, achieving fifth place in the region.

  • Netball: Our Junior Boys Netball team showed great persistence, teamwork and skills to beat their opposition into fourth place at this level.

Athletics:  Alongside Jannik Ernst, fourteen other students represented BSC, competing at this level at Regional level .  Congratulations to all these sport ambassadorson reaching this level of competition; all did a fabulous job - exhibiting confidence, commitment and exemplary sportsmanship.

Division Level

  • Futsal:  The Year 7 Boys Futsal team blitzed this competition, taking out first place.  Unfortunately, there is no regional level to this competition... if there was our boys would knock the competitors' socks off!

A word from a coach...

Coach - Year 7 Basketball

In late October, the Year 7 Basketball team went to Coburg Basketball Stadium to compete in the Regional Finals for Basketball. We played a total of three games. Unfortunately we lost all of our games - but only by a few points  in each .

Even though we were not successful, the boys showed some great improvement. Each student was tested by having to show leadership and teamwork both on and off the court. Overall the boys did an amazing job against some great competition, representing our school very well. Every boy put in a tremendous amount of effort and gave their best in all the games.

It was a great learning experience for everyone who went along, even me! Coaching the team helped build my confidence and develop my problem-solving skills.

Well done boys, I am really proud of every single one of you!

And the students said...

For interschool sports I did basketball. It was fun and our team won all our games.

Year 7

I was on the Futsal team.  The first game was really fun,  even though I wasn't very good and we didn't really know what we were doing! in our second game we played really well  - we won 3 golas to 1 goal! Our last game was a very close scoring too, but we lost. It was great to try a different sport and to play against other schools.

I also played on the  Futsal team. We played 4 games, winning 3 and losing one. We missed out by just 1 point to be in the finals!  In the end,  we placed third - but it was still a fun day.

Year 7

For interschool sports I did futsal and I was in the second team with Jed, Curtis, Eammon, Ned, Andy and Jules. Our team won 2 of our 5 games.  Even though we did not win too many, I really enjoyed going and being there. The one thing I enjoyed the most was watching our A team playing in the final. When it was one-all and went to penalties, the atmosphere was so good and everyone was screaming so loud. The team was 3-1 down and then our keeper saved the next two goal attempts!  The BSC team scored the next two goals - and when Christian scored the last goal, we all ran on the pitch and congratulated them. It was so good to be there!

Overall it was an amazing day.
