Junior Campus Games Day - Wednesday 23rd November

Preps to Year 4 bring along $3 - $4 of silver coins

Next Wednesday, 23rd November the Year Five students will host a ‘Games Day’.  This entails the Year Five students designing and producing a range of fun games for the Prep to Year Fours to play (at a cost of 10 to 20 cents per turn) at lunch time. Each turn is also rewarded with a raffle ticket which goes into the draw for a ToyWorld voucher (Prep to Year 2) or a Sports Power voucher (Year 3 and 4).  The money raised is then used by a Year Five committee to purchase decorations for their End of Myrniong Celebratory Dinner the following week.

Final Week of Library Borrowing at the Handbury Library Next Week

Please be aware that, in order for the Library staff to complete their end of year stock take, next week will be the final week for students to borrow materials.  We strongly recommend that your child continues borrowing from the local library at the conclusion of our borrowing period, to keep up their great reading habits.

Student Achievements

Congratulations to Luke McQueen who earned a Gold Music Practice certificate this week for completing 450 minutes of piano practice!

Well done to Charlotte Rowe, Thomas Stratmann and Wil Ingram who have been terrific team contributors to the Senior Rowing crews, in their roles of cox.  It is a full weekend commitment each week for these young competitors and their families.  Thomas helped his crews achieve three medals at the recent rowing competition at Lake Wendouree.

Congratulations also to Ella Churchill who was awarded the most points at Portland Danz X-tensions for the entire Eisteddfod season, which means that she will now go on to perform one of three solos at their annual end of year concert. This will be a classical ballet solo and will be a big honour as there will be around 500 audience members.

Blessing of the Pets Service - 22nd November at 9.00am

It is time to start primping, preening and grooming your canines, felines, scaly and feathered friends in preparation for our Blessing of the Pets next Tuesday morning.  This special Service of Worship is held on the grounds at Myrniong at 9:00am.  In the past we have had a menagerie of ferrets, turtles, ponies, chickens, sheep, dogs, cats, rabbits, goats and blue tongue lizards.  We do ask that pets are appropriately restrained and taken home at the conclusion of the Service. This is always a memorable event on our school calendar and we will enjoy celebrating it again with Reverend Peter Cook before his retirement at the end of this year.

Walk to School - Bike Prize!

Congratulations to Molly Walker who was the excited recipient of our Walk to School Day bike voucher.  Molly was one of our most regular walkers throughout October!

Percussion in the Gardens

Thank you to Mr. Evans Barker and the Senior Campus Percussion ensemble for visiting us Tuesday lunchtime for an interactive performance in the Junior Campus grounds.  There was quite a gathering of children who quickly engaged in the call and response nature of the music, using maracas, castanets, clave (sticks) and tom tom drums.  It was the perfect weather and atmosphere for this performance!

Reverse Advent Calendar/Uniting Church Hampers

Each year we invite students to bring a couple of Christmas lunch items (e.g. tinned ham, pudding, mince pies, jars of cherries or bon-bons) to donate to the Uniting Church Christmas Hampers.  These gifts are always heartily accepted as there are a great many families and single people in our local area who are ‘doing it tough’ throughout the year and find Christmas a particularly challenging time.  We invite students again to bring in items to donate (we will put them under the Christmas tree at Junior Campus reception and then take them down to the church together).

I recently saw a lovely idea – the reverse Advent Calendar, which you may like to undertake with your family this year. Rather than opening each window and getting a treat, a child thinks of an act of kindness for each of the days.  You could use our Christmas Hamper donations as part of a 12 days of Christmas count down.

End of Year Reporting/Progress Meetings

Semester Two reports will go online for parent access in the final week of school (details to follow).  Teachers are currently contacting families where a follow up progress meeting had been scheduled at the Term Three meetings.  Parents are also most welcome to get in touch with teachers to organise a learning progress meeting before reports are distributed too.  Please organise these through your child’s Record Book.

Support Year Four at the Hirl Market - 26th November

Come along and support our Year Four entrepreneurs at the HIRL market on Saturday, 26th November between 9.00am and 12.00pm.  Throughout the year, the class has undertaken a Business Enterprise programme designed for children.  In teams of three they have formed businesses, branded them, designed and produced goods that they are now ready to sell.  The proceeds will cover the cost of materials (business costs) and profits will be donated to charity.  The children are selling lip balm, plants and gift cards among other products.  They have also been learning about how businesses still operate when members can’t be there, as some have other commitments on this day.

Combined Schools Carols Service at St Mary's Church next Thursday at 1.15pm

Next week our Prep to Year Two Performance Arts choir, joined by Amelie Hiscock, George Huf and Tom O’Sullivan of Year Three, will participate in a combined schools’ Carols Service.  We wish them well for their presentations.  This event starts at 1:15pm and concludes around 2:30pm.  There is some limited seating for parents who wish to attend.

Junior Basketball

The Powerful Owls put in a superb effort at their Semi Final last week.  It was a nail biter – with our team beaten by only one goal.  Thank you to Mr Andrew Hoskyns and Mrs Karen Huf for their work with this team.

A big thank you also to Mrs Jill Dickeson for her time and effort with the Under 12 Girls’ team this season.  Jill has continued to be an important contributor to our basketball over many years.

Students who would like to play basketball next year are reminded that they need to return their Basketball 2017 Expression of Interest forms ASAP.
