Year 9 Camp

Snowy River

Our crew of rafters began our trip bright and early Monday morning, ready for the long, windy drive up to the Snowy River. We met our raft guides and before we knew it, tarps were set up, firewood was collected, and dinner was prepared on the fire. We were learning new skills including the truckies hitch, half hitch, and the dead man. With our tarps set up on the soft, luscious sand, right next to the river, we were looking forward to a cruisy first night and having a well deserved sleep. Unfortunately for us, the weather decided it was not agreeing with what we had planned. We battled through extremely strong winds, raft guide Arby, who has a lazy 30 years experience of rafting on the Snowy, mentioned it was the windiest night he had ever experienced (welcome to camp life Wantirna).

So, after surviving hurricane Snowy on the first night, we battled on and began our rafting adventure on the picturesque Snowy. It took some time to understand how rafting works, we quickly became experts, and made our way down some crazy rapids. We had splash fights, capsizes, and plenty of good times. The weather luckily turned around, and presented us with sunshine filled days with the occasional head wind. We saw plenty of wildlife including lizards and kangaroos to name a few. At night we had campfires, the marshmallows and damper were very popular, we went swimming at sunset, and had plenty of stories told by our guides around the fire. By the end of the camp, our sweet peas were setting the tarps up all by themselves, learnt how to use ‘the groover’, and also learnt that the sun shines really, really early.

Thanks for a great camp everyone, it was an absolute pleasure taking you.
