ATHLETICS DAY

The cold winds in the morning of Thursday 2 August did not stop the students of McKinnon Secondary College attending Duncan Mackinnon Reserve, allowing the annual Athletics Carnival to be a great success once again. Many students gathered in their house areas, rugged up to the theme of Winter Woolies, ready to start the day of competitive races against their friends and other houses.

The morning kicked off with an exciting display of each house, exhibiting the crowds dressed up in their costumes. The 100 metre hurdles and the well anticipated Quidditch game for the Year 12s were next, chasing and tackling Mr Dooley acting as the Golden Snitch to take away the flag.

Next followed numerous field events, including long jump, triple jump and high jump. Many students showed their true talents, leaping immense heights and lengths in these activities. The day continued into the track events, finally allowing McKinnon’s fittest athletes to shine.

Overall, the participation across all events was admirable. It was great to see so many people getting into the true McKinnon spirit.

There were eight new records set on the day, the record breakers were:

  • Victoria Sinyaker - High Jump
  • Jordan Grieve - Triple Jump
  • Lilli Baikie - Discus
  • Cara Smith - Triple Jump
  • Genevieve O’Brien (x2) - 400m & 800m
  • Tom Garner - 200m
  • Seamus O’Brien - Discus

In the end, the extraordinary Gilmore came out on top with 3319 points, Monash came in 2nd with 2832 points, Flynn 3rd with 2158 points and Chisholm in 4th with 2108 points.

Thank you to all the teachers who made this great day possible and a huge congratulations to all who participated, especially all the Gilmorians who helped us bring the flag home once again.

SENIOR GIRLS BADMINTON

The Senior Girls Badminton Team played SMR Finals at Springers Leisure Centre on Monday 30 July. We lost to Mac Robertson High in the first pool match before beating Nossal, which we won after drawing the initial match on both games and points.

Both teams nominated a doubles pair to play a deciding set with Linda Nguyen and Incy Lin coming out on top 24-22 to clinch a thrilling win. Well done to Linda, Cassandra Wu, Incy and Helena Huang for once again representing the school so well.

SENIOR BOYS BADMINTON

The Senior Boys Badminton Team narrowly lost out on both their pool games in the SMR finals at Springers Leisure Centre on Monday 30 July. Melbourne High proved too strong in the first match although a highlight was Hung Nguyen winning the first Singles in a very close game.

In the second match the boys lost out to a very good Nossal team 4-2, with Hung again winning the first singles match. Thanks to Hung, Jo Ee Lee, Chris Hoang and Zen Digby Lapusa for taking the time to play for the school during a very busy time for them.

SENIOR GIRLS HOCKEY

On Monday 6 August the Senior Girls Hockey team competed in the Southern Metropolitan Region Finals for a spot in the State Finals. Our first game against Patterson River Secondary College was an evenly matched affair. Unfortunately, we couldn't manage to convert any of our chances in the first half and then conceded a goal late in the second half, the final result was a 1-0 defeat. The second match was a much improved performance against Mt Eliza Secondary College with the girls dominating possession and not allowing the opposition any chances. Kayla Morina and Simran Sehmi came close to breaking the deadlock but the game finished 0-0, which meant we finished 2nd in our pool.

YEAR 8 BOYS FOOTBALL SMR

After a narrow victory against Parkdale, McKinnon were crowned the 2018 Kingston Division Year 8 Football champions. As a result, McKinnon ventured out to Langwarrin to compete for the Southern Metro Regional title.

Our first match up was a hard fought contest with local rivals Cheltenham Secondary. Cheltenham hit the scoreboard early but were inaccurate, registering 0.5 before McKinnon booted the first of the game. Zak Jacobs entered the match with immediate impact, marking and kicking truly from the top of the square. With 10 minutes to go, McKinnon lead by 10 points. Cheltenham answered with the next 2 majors to take a 2 point lead. It was a frantic final few minutes, with McKinnon having repeat forward 50 entries, but failing to hit the scoreboard. Matt Day won the hard ball all day and lead from the front and the contributions of Zak Jacobs (2 goals), Will Green, Jasper Waldren and Ethan Tran almost got us the result.

Final score: McKinnon 4.4.28 defeated by Cheltenham 3.12.30

Our next match saw us taking on the boys from Berwick Secondary. Berwick were a slick unit and possessed relentless attack on the ball and some silky ball movement. Our boys battled on bravely throughout the match, never dropping their heads. However, we were no match for our opposition. Berwick ran away with the game late to register an emphatic victory. Outstanding performances from Matt Day, Jack Scherer, Thomas Noonan, Tom Howells and Tom Kostolias did the coaches proud.

Well done to the Year 8 Boys Football team on a fantastic campaign and being Kingston champions.

SENIOR GIRLS FOOTBALL SMR

After not conceding a goal on our way to being crowned Senior Girls Football Kingston Division champions, Senior Girls Football ventured out to Mt Eliza to compete in the Southern Metro Region competition.

Our first match up was against the girls from Cheltenham Secondary. Gemma Strangio hit the scoreboard early, booting the first major of the day via a slick finish from 30m out on the run. Arwen Verdnik dominated the ruck contest, providing a platform for midfield dominance from Hayley Carter, Angel Aguilera and Gemma Strangio. McKinnon took a comfortable 2 goal lead into the half time break. After the break, immense forward pressure from Lara Van Zyl and Maddy Axtens resulted in a goal to Katrina Gill. Portia Thorne showed outstanding attack on the ball and McKinnon ran away comfortable winners. Lilly Felder lead from the front all day and Teresa Morrissey was a clear best on ground, marking and intercepting everything that came her way.

Final score: McKinnon 3.2.20 defeated Cheltenham 1.0.6

Our second match of the day was up against Hallam Secondary, with the winner progressing to the Grand Final. It was a hot footy to start the game, with pressure from both sides, a constant throughout that day. McKinnon's backline was absolutely brilliant, with Alex Enever and Remi Van Denderen (Year 10) showcasing relentless attack on the ball and a fantastic desire to impact the contest. Hallam owned the time in forward half statistic, and eventually the dam wall broke. McKinnon trailed Hallam by 3 goals at the main break. After the break, the midfield group showed enormous fight, with Gemma, Hayley, Angel and Arwen refusing to accept defeat. In a losing team, Teresa Morrissey was again a clear best on ground, completely dominating the contest. Unfortunately though, Hallam ran away the winner in the end.

Final score: McKinnon 0.0 - Hallam 4.4.28
