WRITER OF THE MONTH

From February to November each year, a writing competition - called Writer of the Month - is held amongst the students at McKinnon Secondary College. This is where students of all age groups (Years 7-12) may enter any writing piece they have written. Upon hearing about this, a classmate and I chose to enter. My writing piece of choice was a poem, no longer than 18 lines. I chose to write my poem about the wintertime. This is because the seasons were slowly changing from autumn to winter in May, the month I entered the competition. Not long afterwards, the results for the May writing competition came out and I was quite surprised to see that I would be receiving a prize, mostly because I thought I was not very good at writing in general. The prize that I received was a $30 voucher for Benn’s Books. I would really recommend entering this writing competition to other students in my class and year level because it gives students the opportunity to share their work and learn from each other.

Below is a copy of Katelyn’s winning poem:

In the Wintertime

Weary snowflakes slowly descend,

Quivering at the thought of their end.

The sun, melancholy and sad,

Awaiting a summer’s day to be had.

The trees stand tall, bold and bare

Stripped of their beauty and flair.

A wild storm is coming near,

If only the golden sun could appear,

To melt away the frost and snow,

And rid us of this dreadful sorrow.

For the flowers are shrivelled and dead,

The animals have gone, they’ve fled.

The children don’t go out at day,

Nor do they laugh or play.

The winds are too fierce, the snow too strong,

For the little ones to run along.

So they sit by the fireplace and wait and wait,

For a sunny, bright, warmer date.
