PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
RUN McKINNON
The McKinnon Run is to be held on Friday 17 August and we have 900 students and a number of staff in teams running or walking around the oval from 9am to 6pm.
We hope through the generosity of our families and friends we can raise a significant amount of money. All money will be donated to The Monash Children’s Hospital. Our value of community will be celebrated on this special occasion.
We need your help! On the day we will be running a sweets stall where we will sell jars of wrapped confectionery. We ask you to collect your small jars and bottles (from jams or olives) and fill them with your favourite wrapped lollies without nuts (such as Minties and Mentos). Please give your donations to the front office. We encourage you to get your family and friends involved to support such a worthy cause. Your support will be greatly appreciated and we thank you in advance for your donations to help us make the day a success.
Parents are welcome to join us during the hours of 3.10pm to 6pm and support the students.
I thank Mr Hemsley and the Interact Club for their tremendous organisational efforts and in particular Myles Kelemen (Year 11).
We look forward to a wonderful day.
ATHLETICS DAY
I would like to acknowledge the tremendous efforts of the organiser, Ms Alice Carter, who worked tirelessly to make sure that our Athletics Day ran like clockwork. Staff team-work ensured the day was a great success and students participated with enthusiasm, dedication and good cheer. Many wonderful achievements were celebrated and records broken.
Thank you also to the student House Captains for their assistance, to Mr Hemsley and the Interact Club for putting on a very successful sausage sizzle, and the parents who attended, assisted with the events and took lots of photos.
It was indeed a wonderful event and one that reflected our value of Community.
Congratulations to GILMORE on their win!
WINTER CONCERT
Our annual Winter Concert is to be held at the Robert Blackwood Hall on Wednesday 29 August. Rehearsals are well and truly underway. This is always an impressive occasion and a highlight on the school calendar!
I encourage parents, grandparents and friends to attend and celebrate together the showcase of musical talent of our students. Tickets are on sale via the link on the McKinnon Secondary College website: www.mckinnonsc.vic.edu.au
I thank the music team for their efforts and look forward to a very successful event.
CONGRATULATIONS
Hadyn Collier (Year 7) received a Safety Award from his Flying School, Tristar Aviation, which recognises those who consistently demonstrate a commitment to safety in their conduct during their time at the flying school and around aircraft. Well done Hadyn, you are a great ambassador for our school community.
CONGRATULATIONS
CONGRATULATIONS to Mr Adam Van Langenberg on receiving his My Brother Jack Award for 2018 at the Bentleigh and Caulfield RSL Open Short Story Awards This is such a wonderful achievement. Well done Adam!
SCIENCE WEEK
Next week McKinnon will be celebrating Science Week. An array of activities have been organised for students, giving them great opportunities to explore engineering, robotics, biology, physics and more.
One of the highlights will be a workshop for Year 10s led by three expert scientists - who happen to be ex-McKinnon students! These are Professor Gab Kovacs (Member of the Order of Australia) who graduated from McKinnon in 1965 and was pioneer in the development and success of IVF; Professor Jim Bishop (Order of Australia), who graduated in 1966 and was the founding Executive Director and Chair of the Cancer Research Advisory Committee of the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre; and Dr Lev Kats who graduated in 1996 and is group leader in the Cancer Therapeutics Program at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
It will be a great honour to host these distinguished guests and we are looking forward to learning about their experiences in the Science industry. Thanks in advance to the Science Faculty to organising all the events. It is going to be lots of fun.
