If you wish to email or organise a meeting, please first consider 3B4Me – that is, check if the Career Notices, Career Newsletter or your child can answer your questions, if not, then please email Elly Martin emartin@mscw.vic.edu.au and include any questions you would like to ask and your preferred availability.

The Careers Team:

Year 9 Students and Parents – Morrisby Careers

As part of the Careers Program at Marist-Sion College, Year 9 students will complete the Morrisby Careers Profile online set of assessments and questionaires on Wednesday 9 February. The result is an interactive web based report which will be available the evening of Wednesday 9 February. Parents are encouraged to review and discuss this report with their child/ren.

In preparation for this all Year 9 students will participate in an Info Briefing on Tuesday 8 February and following the Morrisby Profiling will be guided through a process of reflection relating to their individual report and results.

All Year 9 students will be required to upload a copy of their Morrisby Report and Reflection to their Year 9 Careers subject on Simon.

Following this, Year 9 students will have an individual meeting with a Careers Team member (Elly Martin, Siobhan Thomas or Ben Cunningham) to discuss their report in more detail. Any parent wishing to attend this meeting is encouraged to make contact with Elly Martin ASAP so a mutually convenient time can be scheduled well in advance. Please note there will only be a limited number of after school time slots available.

This program aims to help students as they make choices about their learning, post-school pathways, work and life goals. One major benefit of this program is that students receive a lifetime login – which means this valuable career resource is available to students beyond their time at Marist-Sion College.

Further details on the Morrisby Careers is available at https://www.careeranalysts.com.au/.

Year 10 Students and Parents – Work Experience/Structured Workplace Learning

Year 10 students were encouraged to use the recent break to investigate opportunities for placement for this year’s Work Experience in June, or in the case of Year 10 Applied students, for their first lot of Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) placement in June.

Despite the context of uncertainty, it is important that we commence this process early to provide ample time for students to secure placement and complete the associated requirements. Should placements not be permitted, Year 10 students and parents/caregivers will be advised. But we are pressing on with a positive mindset as research suggests young people who participate in programs like work shadowing or placement, where there is direct engagement with employers and workplaces, are more likely to experience higher wages; greater job, career and life satisfaction; and lower rates of NEET (not in education, employment or training) (OECD How youth explore, experience and think about their future).

On Thursday 3 February during Lesson 1 to 5 all Year 10 students will participate in Year 10 Work Experience and SWL Day which will provide information as to the details and requirements of Work Experience/SWL and provide an opportunity to complete some of the necessary requirements associated with this program (See Step 4 below). Students will also be given a chance to review Morrisby and start planning for career decision-making later in the year relating to senior options.

To summarise the Work Experience/SWL process, Students:

  • Step 1: Collect forms, provided in info session – spares available from Careers Office
  • Step 2: Find an employer/business (NB: placement with parent, hospital or aged-care will not be approved)
  • Step 3: Complete the forms
  • Step 4: Complete and electronically submit the Induction Handbook including OHS General and Industry Specific Modules
  • Step 5: Return forms to Student Reception (employer email is required)
  • Step 6: If your WE/SWL is approved you will receive a copy of an email directed to your host employer which includes a copy of your approved forms and employer pack.

All Year 10 students will be required to upload a copy of their Safe@Work General Certificate, Safe@Work Industry Certificate and Induction Handbook to their Year 10 Careers subject on Simon. These assessment tasks and forms must be returned 12 May, which is one week before the Year 10 Careers Day (19/5/22).

#GirlsTradeUp (#GTU) Expo – 8 & 9 March 2022 (TBC) at Melbourne Convention Centre

This new event coincides with International Women’s Day and has the aim of supporting women to build successful careers in male dominated industries.

This inaugural event celebrates women in non-traditional vocational fields, and encourages girls to build successful careers in traditionally male-dominated industries.

Young women in Years 9 and 10 will have the opportunity to participate in a series of hands-on activities and panel discussions, giving them real exposure to careers in traditionally male dominated industries like IT, building and construction, agriculture, and electrotechnology.

It’s a chance for girls to establish connections with employers and the expo’s key industry supporters, including Tradeswomen Australia, Builders Academy Australia, Top 100 Women, the Boating Industry Association of Victoria and MAS. Students will hear from inspiring women working in these fields, who will be present to discuss in-demand skills, the rewarding and highly paid career opportunities available, and how girls can be supported to undertake training in these pathways.

The expo is open to all secondary schools across Victoria.

Interested Year 9 and 10 girls are invited to email Mrs Elly Martin if interested in participating.
