SAINTS BOARDING

News from Brett Toombs

Director of Boarding

Welcome to our New Boarders

At the start of Semester 2, with much excitement, we welcomed 11 new boarders. We hope they will soon feel at home and enjoy the wonderful experiences that boarding offers. Here are their names, year levels and details of where they are from:

Girls: Ramona Bond (Year 8, Weipa); Delphina Day (Year 10, Weipa); Aliyah Fujii (Year 9, Thursday Island); Annabella Tyrrell (Year 9, the Northern Territory).

Boys: Bryle Guarin (Year 8, Entrance Island); Subita Lui (Year 10, Thursday Island); Timothy Mari (Year 7, Thursday Island); Lachlan Vella (Year 10, Babinda); Darcy Watt (Year 10, Western Australia).

Torei Gakuen High School Visit

We welcomed 25 students from Torei Gakuen High School, Japan this week for a 10-day stay in Cairns. The students and their teachers are staying in boarding and will experience a variety of planned activities, including those offered to our boarders.

Important Exeat Weekend Information

Our next exeat weekend is on 13 and 14 August at the end of week 5. Monday 15 August is a student-free day for St Augustine’s College only, and boys residences will reopen from 3pm on the Monday. Our staff can arrange transport from the airport for anyone flying in earlier that day.

However, St Monica’s does not have a student-free day on the Monday, and there are several activities taking place such as camps and retreats. Therefore, girls boarding will reopen from 3pm on Sunday, 14 August. Our staff will collect anyone from the airport who arrives earlier that day.

Can families please email return flight itineraries to respective heads of residence asap.

Weekends in Boarding

Each term, boarders can submit leave requests to spend three weekends with approved families and friends. On all other weekends boarders are expected to stay in. Heads of residence and I understand that sometimes family situations arise that require boarders to be out during these weekends. However, as  a general rule, all boarders should be in residence outside of free and exeat weekends.

Academic Excellence and Effort in Boarding

In the previous newsletter, we acknowledged our boys in boarding who have shown a strong commitment to their studies and received an academic award for the first semester. Once again, congratulations to the following boys for their excellent achievements across all subjects:

Juniors: Zai Laifoo, Max Masterman, Jack Calleja.

Middle School:  Patrick Arnold, Henry King, Jamie Kennan, Charlie Lawrence, Jyrell Richardson, Gus Rolfe.

Seniors: Reeve Kleinschmidt, Edward Nancarrow, Kibbim Titasey, Martin Weiss.

We now move our focus to our Academic Effort Awards where we will acknowledge those girls and boys who are applying themselves fully in class to reach their potential. Certificates will be presented at our next boarders Mass.

Sunday Night Boarders Mass

It was pleasing to receive the news that we can again celebrate Sunday night Mass for our boarders from this Sunday 7 August at 7pm. Mass is compulsory for all boarders, who must be back in residence by 5.45pm in time for dinner.

After-school Activities

There isnoshortage of activities for our boarders at the end of the school day and on weekends, and these resumed in the second week of term.
