Walking the Walk in the Battle Against Cancer

By Ryan O’Connor - Year 12

Thirty-seven Men of Saints walked lap after lap of Barlow Park on 30 July for the benefit of cancer awareness and research. The event was Relay for Life 2022. Run by the Cancer Council, Relay for Life is a global movement that brings communities together to celebrate cancer survivorship, remember loved ones lost and fight back against the disease.

Relay For Life is a fun experience that raises vital funds for the Cancer Council's research, prevention and support services. It took place last Saturday from 1-11pm, a great effort by all the lads who attended. The day consisted of an array of activities such as tug of war as well as Relay’s got Talent. Our Saints Team A won the tug of war and Saxonn Capilos won third place in the talent show with his cover of Isn’t she lovely by Stevie Wonder; a great demonstration of our school’s dominance at this paramount event.

The initial lap is known as the survivor lap in which our very own Lachlan Mann-Jones bravely took part. As the day turned to night, the closing ceremony was a memorial lap for those we had unfortunately lost to this unforgiving disease. It was a pivotal display of reverence. I can most certainly say that all participants from St Augustine's and other organisations within our region thoroughly enjoyed themselves. We raised $15,035 an incredible effort, and the highest amount raised by a school.
