Senior Volleyball Cup

Saints sent two volleyball teams to the annual Senior School Volleyball Cup competition, at Smithfield High School on Tuesday 26 July. With growth of the competition, 14 teams with schools from the Tablelands, Mossman and Cairns all competed. Saints 2 featured Year 11 players with varying volleyball experience levels. Saints 2 finished second in their pool, only losing a hard-fought game to eventual grand-finalists, Cairns High Team 1. They then progressed to the semi-finals where they faced another strong Cairns High team. After losing the first set, Saints 2 were fighting back strongly in the second set before the game time expired, ultimately costing them a chance of victory as they went down 1-0. The achievements of a largely inexperienced Saints Team 2 on the day were encouraging as they tested some of the strongest teams in the region.

Saints senior team, Saints 1, who consisted of mainly Year 11 and 12 CISSA volleyball players, breezed through the pool rounds without dropping a set to finish top of their pool and progress to the semi-finals. They faced a raw and naturally talented Woree team. After taking the first set convincingly, Woree fought back and contested the second set before the team’s composure ensured they achieved a 2-0 victory to set up a grand final with their long-time rivals, Cairns High. Saints 1 started with a flurry in the first set, dominating Cairns High to win the set quickly. However, in the second set Cairns High fought back and at one point led by 8 points. Saints 1 regrouped after a time out and played composed volleyball that ensured they did not drop a set for the entire day. Ultimately they recovered momentum to take the second set 25-21 and won the grand final 2-0. All the boys in both teams played exceptionally well. Congratulations to Johle Vincent who was awarded player of the final for his performance. This is the first time that St Augustine’s have managed to win this competition in its five-year history; a massive achievement.

Johle, a senior player, is running open volleyball training sessions on the outdoor basketball court on Friday afternoons for any students from Years 7 to 12 who wish to learn or play the sport. Everyone is encouraged to get down and have a dig!

JSS

Saints have made a steady start to the 2022 JSS sports campaign. In Round 1 we took on arch-rivals, Cairns High. We secured convincing wins in AFL (60-0) and volleyball (2-0), but unfortunately suffered tight losses in basketball (24-42), football (1-2) and touch (5-6). Saints took on St Andrew’s in Round 2 managing to win four out of the five fixtures. The AFL team continued their strong start winning 52-1, basketball (38-21), football (4-0) and touch (8-5) all achieved strong victories. Unfortunately, the volleyball team couldn’t capitalise on their convincing first set and went down 1-2. All these teams will be looking to build on their start and go deep into the competition.

Year 8 Rugby League

The Year 8 rugby league competition is underway for the term. The Saints team, consisting of Years 7 and 8 players made a strong start to the season with an impressive 30-8 victory over heavyweights, Woree High. The team put in a well-rounded performance with Xavier Lallemand starring with a hat-trick of tries, and forwards Jack Calleja and Harrison Bennett barging over for tries of their own with Tyler Batten kicking a perfect 6 from 6 conversions. The team’s defence was a real highlight as they frustrated Woree out of the game.

In Round 2 we made the trip south to Bentley Park College. The team got off to a quick start through an early try to Jack Calleja. Saints then struggled to complete our sets, allowing Bentley Park back into the game. A try to Xavier Lallemand ensured that we went into half time at 10-10. Saints then recomposed themselves at half-time and came out with more intent, showing great defensive resolve and attitude, ensuring that Bentley remained scoreless in the second half. Xavier Lallemand and Jack Calleja scored their second tries of the game to secure a 20-10 victory. The team have demonstrated a great ability to work together and will only get better as the season progresses. The boys face St Mary’s at St Mary’s in the next round.
