Queensland Symphony Orchestra Cairns Prodigy Project
Congratulations to Jakk Burdett, who has been selected from some of the best student instrumentalists in Cairns, to participate in the above project. Jakk will perform one of the pieces with QSO at their Superfamous concert at Munro Martin Park on Sunday 28 August. Before the concert, he will receive a trumpet lesson with one of QSOs finest and attend a rehearsal with the orchestra. This is a wonderful opportunity for Jakk and great recognition of his talent and hard work.

Opera Queensland
Our students in Years 10 to 12 will be treated to a performance of Puccini's La Bohème in Lennon Hall on 11 August. We will also be hosting our sister college, St Monica’s, for this event. It’s a wonderful opportunity to expose our students to opera – something many of them have never seen. We are very excited to be offering this production to our senior music students.
Music Extension 2022
Last night capped off the final internal assessment performances of the combined classes of St Augustine's and St Monica's Music Extension Students at Elixir Bar. Arts Captain, Saxonn Capilos performed two great pieces on his bass guitar using a looping pedal and in the second, he also sung. It was a wonderful evening of high quality entertainment from all the students involved. A big thank you to St Monica's College and in particular Mrs Jo Langtree for hosting and teaching our MEXS students.
Events
In week 6, our Saints ensembles will be performing in our annual Open Evening – Cerise and Blue. If your son is involved in the Percussion Ensemble, Big Band or the College Choir, he will be required to attend. The formal college uniform is to be worn for the performances.
In week 7, we will be holding our annual Saints Unplugged evening. Wednesday night is for juniors in Years 7-9 and Thursday night, for seniors in Years 10-12. This is an opportunity for individuals or small groups to perform for parents and friends in a relaxed but intimate setting in McLaughlin Theatre. Nibbles and drinks will be available. If your son is interested in performing, please ask him to contact me on Teams or email: cspannenbu@cns.catholic.edu.au.
Our annual Combined Colleges Ensembles Evening will also be held in week 7 on the Thursday evening in Lennon Hall, following on from our Father’s Day Assembly. Finally in week 10, our drama students will present performances in their annual Drama Evening in McLaughlin Theatre.
It is a packed term, so mark these dates in your calendars so you don’t miss out.
Keeping in Touch
Much of our communication with students is via Teams and email. Please encourage your son to check these regularly so he stays abreast of what is happening, particularly given we’ve had some very last minutes changes lately due to injury and illness. If your son is going to be absent due to injury or illness, he's expected to directly contact the director of any ensembles he's involved in or his instrumental music teacher, as the student office does not pass this kind of information on.
Spirit of Arts Awards
All students who participate in Music, Drama, Visual Art and Film, Television and New Media are eligible to apply for an award. Handbooks and journals are available from the arts staffroom, and we encourage everyone to participate in the program.
For any questions regarding the Spirit of Arts Awards not outlined in the journal, please contact me on cspannenbu@cns.catholic.edu.au
Opportunities
Each of the opportunities below can count towards the Spirit of Arts Awards.
If entering the high school student category your film must be submitted via a teacher liaison or head of department at your school by Thursday 7 October. The nominated person will ensure all submissions are sent to the Understory Film Festival by 4pm Monday 11 October.
Young Composers Competition
The annual ASME Queensland Young Composers Competition allows young composers from across the state to submit their own works for critique and assessment by our adjudicators, who work as professional composers in Australia, and vie for a prize at its awards ceremony. Previous entrants and winners of the competition have gone on to study composition at a tertiary level or work in the music industry as professional composers.
Young composers from Years 1 to 12 attending a Queensland school can enter their works across three sections: Electronic Music, Song Writing and Vocal/Instrumental. Entries close 2 September. For more information visit: https://www.asme.edu.au/qld/young-composers/
Any opportunities for our arts students outside the College are published on the Saints Arts Facebook Page. Upcoming performances and events are also published there under Events. Be sure to like the page to keep up with what’s happening in the performing arts around the College.
