Learning Focus

In Reading, students will:

Participate in and contribute to text discussions (clarifying ideas, developing and supporting arguments, sharing and evaluating information, experiences and opinions)
Begin to use features and top level structures to summarise the important ideas in the text
Compare inferences with those of other readers, understanding that ideas in texts can be conveyed from different viewpoints which can lead to multiple interpretations and responses

In Writing, students will:

Re-read their notebooks regularly to identify entries they might possibly work on for publication
Take pride in the content and presentation of their writer’s notebook and pieces that are to be published
Spend an extended amount of time writing authentic texts on a daily basis, articulate and where possible, practise their goal as discussed during conferencing.

In Maths, students will:

Year 5 :

Solve problems involving multiplication of large numbers by 1 or 2 digit numbers using efficient mental and written strategies
Solve problems involving division by 1 digit number, including those that result in a remainder
Identify and describe factors and multiples of whole numbers and use them to solve problems
Use estimation and rounding to check the reasonableness of answers to calculations
Use efficient mental and written strategies to solve problems

Year 6:

Multiply decimals by whole numbers and perform divisions by non-zero whole numbers where the results are terminating decimals
Multiply and divide decimals by the powers of 10
Select and apply efficient mental and written strategies to solve problems involving whole numbers and make estimations for these computations (includes real life problems)

In addition, students will be exploring the applied mathematical areas of Area and Data.

The Unit of Work this term will focus on Indigenous Australians and the historical and present-day impact of significant First Nations people, their connection to country and important cultural events.
