Prep News

It has been wonderful to be back in the classroom and getting back into our classroom routines. We are so proud of our Preps and their smooth transition back into school following Remote Learning. Our Prep students demonstrated fantastic resilience during this time and we loved seeing so many smiling faces on Zoom. What superstars! This week, we are focusing on reconnecting with teachers and friends. In Reading, the Preps have been enjoying our focus on Fairy Tales and have been learning about all the different characters and settings. In Writing, we are continuing to encourage students to listen to the sounds they can hear in words, with a focus of writing on the line. We have been continuing our focus on recounts to learn about writing about an experience. In Maths, we have been continuing to build our skills of counting and recognising our numbers to 20 and ordinal numbers. We are also very excited to be celebrating our 100 days of school! What an amazing achievement for our Preps. We are so proud of how far they have come throughout these 100 days. Our 100 days of school celebration will be on Wednesday 18th of August. This will be a very exciting day- filled with lots of 100 activities. We will be sending out a compass post soon with all the key details so stay tuned!

Kind regards,

Alarna Creed, Ellie Stait, Hayley Peirce and Claire Cripps

Level 1/2 News

The Grade 1/2 students have enjoyed reconnecting with friends and learning collaboratively alongside their classmates. In Maths, we have been busy naming, drawing and constructing 3D shapes from nets to learn about their features. We have enjoyed using Epic to research Olympic events. The students then used this new knowledge to write a report describing facts about a chosen sport.

Our Inquiry into Light & Sound continues as students build their scientific language through hands-on investigations.

The children are looking forward to learning some more French this term and using technology to support their understanding of language and culture.

We are really excited to announce that the Level 1/2 students will be participating in basketball clinics towards the end of term. Thanks so much to our PE coordinator,  Stevie Minton, for applying for grants and organising this for our students.

It is lovely to get back into school routines and we hope families continue to read regularly at home to fill up those Home Reading Calendars. Please remember to add books to the Premier's Reading Challenge!

Kind regards,

Kayla Hartrick, Daena Hailey, Reuben Langerak,  Ben Pedley, Llinos Poole and Tim Wilson.

Level 3/4 News

It has certainly been an interesting start to Term 3!

Firstly, we are so grateful our school production fell on the first few days of term, rather than any later when it would have been cancelled.

Mrs Warner did an absolutely amazing job pulling it off!

Production is always such a wonderful, and worthwhile, experience for our students, and so, so much fun! We are immensely proud of our 3/4 students and their efforts. Being backstage on the night was almost as much fun as being on stage. We were able to watch the different performances and enjoy other parts of the show.

While production has certainly been a high for Term 3 yet another lockdown is certainly a low. Thank you again for your efforts and support during Remote Learning.

It was a relief to return to school this week to smiling faces!

Yesterday we enjoyed celebrating our T3 Inquiry unit ‘Forces and Functions’ with our paper plane challenge. The kids had a ball throwing their creations around outside. Thank you to the parents and families who supported the kids in reading about, researching, adapting and adjusting their planes.

We’ve also enjoyed learning about the Olympics and have been very supportive of our Australian athletes’ endeavours in Tokyo. Aussie Aussie Aussie!

We are hopeful Term 3 has no remaining interruptions with many exciting things to go ahead, for example each 3/4 class hosting assembly or Hoop Time. We will keep you updated on how restrictions continue to impact school activities, as always please check Compass regularly for information and updates.

Level 5/6 News

Hello Level 5/6 students, families and staff,

I hope this email finds you well!

Looking back over the last two weeks in Level 5/6 at Rolling Hills Primary school we have been working on:

Reading -

We began Term 3 with a focus on Poetry.

The students learnt to understand and interpret poetry elements with a focus on analysing and inferring the language involved in poems. The students also learnt to identify and explain language features of poetry.

Writing -

We began Term 3 with a focus on developing an understanding of poetry. The students learnt about different types of poetry and how to write them. Including a rhyming couplet and an ode. They created their own and published their pieces.

Maths -

The students began working on Operating with Fractions. The students worked on understanding how to represent a fraction in a range of ways. They looked at the different parts of a fraction, proper fractions, improper fractions, Identifying the different strategies to use when confronted with a worded problem, Identifying other possible ways to solve the problem using different strategies and use a number of strategies to solve increasing complex worded ‘real’ word problems. Students also worked on how to represent a fraction in a range of ways.

  • Inquiry- We began learning about ‘The Journey to Discovery’. The students learnt about the difference between when we find something, and when a scientist makes a scientific discovery so that we appreciate the effort that goes into making scientific discoveries. We also practised conducting simple tests so that we appreciate the importance of accuracy when measuring.

Stay safe,

The level 5/6 team
