WHAT'S HAPPENING @ SCSC?

Year 8 & 9 Lockdown Fun
Our Year 9 FUSE students have been participating in a virtual Kahoot competition, which was fun warm up game for their English film study unit. The students had to guess the movie title based on emojis and Maddison J. was the winner!
Also our Year 8 students had a spelling test and Kahoot competition for 8E Indonesian. Isla H. got 20/20 in the spelling test and Hanna C. came first in the Kahoot!
Year 9 Media
Our Year 9 Media students have been busy completing a creative task which involved exploring their home and local neighbourhood (within 5km) photographing items spelling out their name. Can you guess some of the student names?
Sports Academy
After so much disruption in 2020, it has been fantastic to see the students gain momentum, skill and confidence in their Sports Academy sessions, particularly Athlete Development where we have been working on sport specific plyometrics and individually prescribed prevention and rehab exercises.
It has made us so happy to see our Sports Academy athletes contributing successfully to the school’s interschool sports teams. Congratulations to all athletes on a great term last term and your commitment to training through the cold winter mornings.
Athletes Term 2:
With so many inspiring, committed and high-performance young athletes picking our recipients has been a hard choice, however the worthy winners were selected for their attitude, effort and displaying the school values of ‘Strive, Unite, Respect and Flourish.’
Congratulations to the following students:
· Overall Athlete of the Term: Evelyn C (Year 8)
· Soccer Athlete of the Term: Aisha M (Year 7)
· Netball Athlete of the Term: Kirrah N (Year 9)
· AFL Athlete of the Term: Riley C (Year 8)
· Basketball Athlete of the Term: Olivia B (Year 7)
· Athlete Development Athlete of the Term: Xavier M (Year 9)
· Coaches Award: Charlie B (Year 9)
Term 2 Workshop: Injury Prevention, Recovery and Sports Nutrition
Sports Academy is just as much about Athlete Education and linking our students to local practitioners for longevity in their sports, as it is about learning sporting skills.
The theme of our Term 2 Sports Academy Workshop Day was ‘Injury Prevention, Recovery and Sports Nutrition’ and the students completed practical workshops with:
- Tom O’Halloran: Rehab Physio at Mechanics of Movement. The students participated in running technique drills, screens and simple tests to check their run specific strength and capabilities
- Daniela Equid: Sports Dietitian. Students learnt about fuelling for health, training and competition and also workshopped positive body image.
- Kate Smyth: Sports Naturopath and Olympian. Kate workshopped appropriate sports recovery methods the students could start implementing easily into their lives and shared some of her experiences representing Australia at the Beijing Olympics in the Marathon.
There were many worthwhile takeaways from both staff and students and we look forward
to Term 3’s Workshop day.
Barwon Club Gig
On Wednesday night, 14th July, we had another fantastic gig at the Barwon Club Hotel. Maybe our best ever?
The audience were treated to a range of musical styles, from 60’s British Pop, 90’s Grunge, 70’s Rhythm & Blues all the way to Contemporary Funk.
Our SCSC bands featured Abby F, Joely M, Will G, Abbey C, Jai G, Audrey L, Mila W, Venus M, Immy D, Luna W, Tom V, Jutwah F, Mink C, Manny S, Josh B, Angus D and they were
helped out by the wonderful Annabel D from Year 9 on drums.
With a great audience including family and friends, who lapped
up every song, the atmosphere was incredible! We thank you for all your support.
A special mention to Lee Wise, our skilled and patient sound engineer - thank you for all your hard work.
Year 12 Chemistry
Year 12 Chemistry have got right back into doing practicals they were unable to do over the lockdown period. Kayla has just finished a titration to determine the concentration of ethanoic acid in Woolworths brand white vinegar.
Introducing...
Rachel Barney
We are excited to be welcoming new Acting Assistant Principal, Rachel Barney, into the SCSC team. Rachel will commence working at SCSC over the next two weeks as she transitions to us from Melton Secondary College. Her portfolio areas will include Wellbeing, Professional Learning and overseeing our Senior Sub School.
We caught up with Rachel and asked her a little about herself:
What did you do before teaching?
"I've been teaching for about 15 years so it is difficult to remember life before teaching! Whist I was at university, I worked in a Village Cinema and a restaurant, and coached afterschool sport."
What are you looking forward to most about working at SCSC?
"I have heard so much about the warm, friendly and connected school community at Surf Coast, so I am looking forward to getting to know the staff and students.
I am also really excited by the innovative programs and curriculum that the College offers and I can’t wait to see it all in action."
Rachel will be filling the position vacated by Kathryn O’Neill. Kath finished up at SCSC last Friday. We thank and farewell Kath and celebrate her time with us and all that she has contributed. We look forward to welcoming Rachel to the team!
Former SCSC Student makes the Matildas!
A big congratulations to ex-student Kyra Cooney-Cross, who played in the first official Olympic soccer match last week in Tokyo. She was a substitute and played the final fifteen minutes of the game
and created some very special plays! A sensational start for Kyra and we wish her and the Matildas all the best during these games!
