S A K & Garden
Alba Galban- Stephanie Alexander Garden Specialist
It’s been a busy term all round with the Year 2s having their first experience in the garden. They have been having lots of fun with flower prints and planting a seed. We are also preparing soil for our next season's crop.
Garlic is one of the plants we grow in the garden. It really fascinates the children that when we place a single clove in the ground it, produces a whole head of garlic. Garlic is best planted in autumn and harvested in late spring and summer. Potatoes are another vegetable that students find interesting, that the seed is the potato, and the fun they have hunting for them when it's time to harvest.
Year 3/4 have more responsibility in the garden with moving soil, mulch and composting. They have been learning this term about the tools that we use and have acquired a Tool License. They also have an understanding of how composting happens and soil preparation. We have cleaned up some of the garden beds ready for a soil preparation and planting. They are enjoying the independence they have been given in the garden and are learning to appreciate the environment we are creating.
