Junior School Highlights

The Junior and Senior School combined to host assemblies to celebrate student successes earlier this term. It was fantastic to see so many students receiving awards, but also many students presenting on behalf of their club/group. Well done to Zoe and John who ran their first assemblies and Emma, Georgia, Aimee and Antoine for speaking on behalf of the Student Voice and eLearning Squad.

We’ve had several sporting activities: GEC Athletics Carnival, intermediate interschool sport, intermediate softball state championships and the Beachside Cross Country. A big shout out to Jared Freedman who placed 1st in the 13 years old boys division at the cross country competition. Huge congratulations to the intermediate softball team who played at the State Finals on Tuesday 23rd May. The Year 8 badminton girls and boys were the division winners on Thursday 8th June. Good luck at the SMR finals in August!

The Art Club is in full swing with the hoarding around Room 108 looking fabulous thanks to the very talented students, led by Miss Cowley. If you get the chance to view the artwork, you will not be disappointed.

We welcome back Leah, Tahlia and Tiphaine who were selected to represent the college in Paris for a week, accompanied by Madame Loveena and Mrs Kindler as a result of winning the Dis-Moi Dix Mots competition. It was an amazing team effort by students of 9C, Year 7 and 10 CNED. You should all be very proud!

The production is full steam ahead with many students involved throughout the Junior School. If you haven’t yet heard, the production is FAME JR. Students can be involved in the crew: backstage, lighting, props. We are very much looking forward to the performances and hope to see you all there.

I will be away from Monday 19th June - Monday 31st July. If you have any questions or queries please don’t hesitate to contact one of the members of the Junior School Team.

Year 7 Highlights

Well done Year 7s, you have completed your first semester at secondary school. Once again term 2 has proven to be very busy.  Many students have written their first essay in English, played a new sport, completed their first chemistry experiment or even done their first and last detention for being late to school.

The annual Athletics Carnival saw many interesting costumes and perfect weather for competing. It was exciting to see the large number of Year 7s competing in track and field events. Stay tuned for the next newsletter to hear about our Junior School Assembly and our amazing achievements.

A new semester means several new subjects including Home Economics and Materials. This is the time to ensure you have all the correct equipment and books before commencing term 3.

Year 8 Highlights

Rather than talk about the semester ahead and the assessment tasks due, it might be a good time to reflect on where we were 3 months ago and to remember camp Kangroobie, when students were challenged outside of the classroom. It was a very positive camp and proves to us that this Year 8 cohort is a great group.

“The apples were really good and my favourite activity was the farm activities.” – Clea

“I really liked the atmosphere and there were acres of space. The food was good too.” – Nicola

“It was cold and acceptable, and occasionally warm.” – Lucas

“It was fun and tiring, and wet and cold. The best thing was playing table tennis.” – Richard

“The people running it were very nice.” – Ishi

“I liked being near the hills and the coastal cliffs.” – Claudia

It now seems a world away. Make sure you all get out of the city on the holidays.

Year 9 Highlights

The first Year 9 camp with students from 9D, 9E and 9F was held in Week 6 at Rubicon Nayook. Thanks to Adam Golding, Tori Mulligan, Kathryn Vaughan-Niven (student support) and Sasha Byrnes (student teacher) for attending with me. The weather, thankfully, remained mild for the residential group, with all the outdoor activities for us to do, such as canoeing, high ropes, caving and rogaining, however, it was a bit more challenging for the 12 students and Mr Mulligan who spent the week hiking and camping in Wilsons Promontory in the occasional torrential downpour. Nevertheless, students in all groups had a fantastic time and got to develop their teamwork and leadership skills.

Congratulations to Mikki Clemans who has been cast in this year's Victorian State Schools Spectacular. As part of this program, Mikki has also been selected to take part in a workshop event with the Australian Chamber Orchestra at the Performing Arts Unit on Monday 26 June. This event will see VSSO players working with some of Australia’s most exciting string players.

Another Year 9 student who is seeing great success in performing arts is Niomi Adelman. Niomi has been cast in an local production of Grease Jr, which will be performing in July at the Richmond Theatrette.
