Magis report

After the great success of the Magis-run Years 11 and 12 House Mental Mathematics Championship last week, Homerooms in Years 8 to 10 are now organising teams for the challenge for these year groups, with the Year 7 cohort competing the week after.  The full results for the Year 11 and 12 section are on the linked Mental Maths Results poster below.  Special thanks to the House Coordinators and Homeroom teachers for their great assistance with this event, and congratulations to all participants.

The Magis Committee met this week and discussed the ongoing program.  House Academic challenges will continue with the Academic Knowledge and Intellectual Logic Challenges the next scheduled. These will be after the mid-year exams or early in Term 3. The John XXIII Public Speaking Championship, deferred because of COVID-19, will also take place later this term, followed by the Chess Championship in Term 3.  The Creative Writing Competition has involved Years 7 and 8 students, and entries close this week. The results, which also count for the House Championship,  should be available in about two weeks.

The WA Debating League is hoping to run the British Parliamentary debating next term.  Details of the format are still being finalised, but John XXIII intends to enter teams in all years from 8 to 12. Year 7’s will have a house debating championship this year as it is felt they need the experience of regular interschool debating next year before attempting the British Parliamentary style.

John XXIII College has purchased twelve places available for the on-line Gifted and Talented  Program run by Julie Arliss and Academy Conferences. This is open only to Magis students in Years 10  to 12 and nomination forms will be distributed next week.  Nominations for the Brainways STEM Program for Years 7-8 students will also be available next week.
