Year 8 Retreat

Year 8 recently participated in their annual Retreat on Thursday and Friday last week. Year 8 was divided into two groups with It was held over two separate days with a day allocated for each group.

Some of our students wrote down their reflections on the day.

The Year 8 Retreat was a fun day. In the first session we got separated into small groups and we discussed what superpower we wanted to have. Our group decided to have an invisible super power so that we could hide from people. The next activity we did was play group rock, paper, scissors. We won 3 rounds but didn’t get into the grand final.

In the second session we played superhero themed  'jockey’s up'. We also watched some clips on superhero vs villain movies and then went to our groups and discussed what were the similarities and the differences. For lunch we had pizza and then we went to the park and played 'forty-four homes'.

In the third session we got told some stories by Bridie. We also went back into our small groups and we had balloons and we had to try to keep them up in the air while we were sitting down and the balloons could not touch the floor. We also filled out a sheet that represented the 5 most important people in our life.

So overall it was a fun day and I had a great time, I learned different kinds of games and how to be a good person.

I personally liked the Year 8 Retreat as it had some fun activities and made you think about a few concepts. One of which was the question, “What is the difference between superheroes and villains” which I learnt the difference between them is intention. The day was filled with games that would require teamwork from our small groups. Group rock paper scissors was a good example of a game that you needed to have good teamwork, communication and cooperation skills when trying to decide what to pick, rock, paper or scissors. Another team exercise was  called “Defying gravity” when we had to keep a certain amount of balloons in the air and not let them hit the ground. This activity is heavily based on teamwork which made it very fun.

My favourite thing that we did would’ve been extreme rock paper scissors. This was because it has a combination of luck and skill since you have to stretch your leg out once you lose. Another mentionable activity would have been when we watched movie clips that included both superheroes and villains and would have to differentiate the two and how they were different. I liked that because it made you think about villains motives and superheroes and how they were different.

I thought the retreat was quite good, around a 7/10. I enjoyed some of the activities while others bored me a bit. For example the balloon activity was very fun, whereas the writing ones were not as good. I enjoyed the food they gave us and Damo taught us well about God and about heroes.

All of the instructors/Lasallian Youth Leaders were very nice and funny (Tom Honneysett). Tom was our group leader and he led us well. I also liked the break where we went to the park because it was a nice break and time to relax. I loved to meet Damo because he shared his dreams and what he likes, for example he loves music and he produces good songs.

This day was fun and challenging at the same time because it made me think about what's down the road of my life. While I also realized that not all heroes wear capes and need powers.

Year 11 LYL Training

A group of Year 11 LaSallian Youth Leaders  had the opportunity to come together as a team to learn about effective leadership skills and participate in group activities which built an understanding of how to lead in different situations. The purpose of the day was to understand how to be an effective leader which helps us to run the junior retreats that are run throughout the year, as well as giving Year 11 students the experience and knowledge required of a leader in the senior years, looking toward positions of leadership in 2022.

Students took part in many activities that brought out their communication, teamwork and leadership skills. This was ably led by O’Connor LaSallian Youth ministers; Brydie Hawthorne, Caitlin Honeysett and Georgia MacMahon, along with Damian from the LaSallian Leadership team based in Sydney.

Our LYM team displayed excellent role modelling, confidence and kindness throughout the day. The Year 11 students who participated in the day became more confident as each session progressed.

The future of O’Connor Catholic College is in good hands given the leadership skills, team work, friendship and faith demonstrated on the day.

Saints Mary and Joseph Cathedral Parish

Keeping in touch with what is happening in the Cathedral Parish is easy through their website and Facebook pages.

With such a difficult year it has been harder for parishioner's to give to the parish through the plates, particularly when the church was closed. The Parish account details are available on the Parish bulletin.
