Our Learning Overview for Term 2!

 Literacy

This term in Literacy we will continue delivering the InitiaLit program to build upon sound and word knowledge from Term 1.

Students will continue read and spell words using graphemes previously taught and new ones too. In the Year One classrooms, we are introducing Book Club. This is where students work in small groups with their teacher consolidating concepts taught and begin building upon comprehension strategies.

In Writing, students will be spending the term learning the features and structure of narrative texts. Students will be completing a range of different writing activities to continue to build upon their skills to produce a narrative piece of writing at the end of the term.

 Numeracy

During the last two weeks the Grade 1 students have been focusing on addition to 20. Students were introduced to the “Friends of 10.” Students then used their understanding of the Friends of 10 to help them to work out the “Friends of 20.” For example, if I know that 3+2=5, then I can use this to work out 13+2=15. Students used number lines and the 100’s chart to help them work out basic addition equations. Students explored doubles and halves, and how the two are related to each other. Students also worked on finding out the answers to missing number of addition to 20 equations, for example 12+? = 18.

To further develop their understanding of addition to 20 some at home activities include playing addition card games. A good game to play is having two piles of cards in the middle (minus the royal cards) and flipping over two cards at a time. The numbers on the cards are added together, and the person who says the correct answer first gets to keep the cards. The winner is the one who gets the most cards at the end of the game. To make this game harder you can add three cards to add together.

Another way students can practise their addition to 20 skills at home is to go onto Mathletics and go to the “Play” section. This will allow students to compete against the computer, children around the world and their classmates. If you don’t know your child’s Mathletics password could you please see you classroom teacher.

Inquiry

This term in Inquiry the topic is Forces. Students will investigate different types of push and pull forces and how to use forces to create movement. Students will explore the characteristics and properties of materials and components that are used to create these designed solutions. Students also create design solutions to create movement, using their knowledge of forces, appropriate materials, tools and techniques. Students will complete a range of hands-on activities and experiments to see different forces being used.

Wellbeing

This term for wellbeing we will be focusing on emotional intelligence; identifying our emotions, understanding these different emotions and our reactions. Students will be participating in different wellbeing lessons and activities to develop their emotional intelligence understanding and working to develop strategies to help regulate their emotions.
