Debating Report: DAV Schools Competition Round 3

Since debating returned this year, we’ve had an outstanding set of performances. Round 3 on Thursday April 29 was no exception.
Of our eleven teams competing, we had nine wins, an amazing achievement. This is especially so given that our Year 10, 11 and 12 teams competed in their first ‘secret’ topics for the year. These students had only one hour after learning the precise topic for debate to prepare an entire persuasive case. On top of that, speakers were expected to speak to appropriate speaking lengths, including up to eight minutes for Year 11s and 12s.
The secret topics included whether political party room meetings should be open to the public, whether politicians should be allowed to have public social media accounts and whether secondary school classes should be academically streamlined. All of these were complex topics and it was no small feat to prepare in such a short time, with no technology or outside support.
We also won't forget to mention our D Graders, who, in a not-so-secret fashion, excellently debated whether public transportation should be free.
In debating, even completing one’s speech is a fantastic accomplishment, let alone Huntingtower receiving a multitude of victories and 9 Best Speakers.
Those students who were awarded Best Speaker were: Kallista Amery (Year 12), Aiden Fyfield (Year 11), Michael Xiao (Year 10), Lynton Sun (Year 10), Prisha Rewal (Year 9), Nanda Jiang (Year 9), Daniel Liang (Year 9), Aryan Bhola (Year 9) and Jizelle Na (Year 9). A big congratulations to all speakers, especially those awarded Best Speaker for their respective debates.
With five teams remaining undefeated going into the penultimate round of our regional competition, we continue to wish all teams well for their future debates.
