School Counsellor

Emily Bieber - at Kalinda on Mondays and Thursdays in 2021.

Hello everyone,

I hope you are feeling ready for winter. We are certainly well on our way to colder days!

Counselling services continue to be available (although in high demand), please contact Lauren Hopkins to make a referral, and please, if you could remind your child, if they wish to see me, they can contact me via their classroom teacher.

Lots of parents are struggling to find external counselling and support services. It feels like demands for all mental health and support services have risen post-2020. I wish I had a magic wand for this – affordable and accessible counselling for all!

I see lots of things I can eat!

This week, I am going to share a RECIPE! Which is pretty funny given that I am a terrible cook. It’s a recipe for all families and might help with fussy eaters and sharing of CONTROL. Control is a major hurdle for meal times: parents try to win the control by setting expectations of how much to eat and how many veggies, etc. And kids crave a sense of control too…..what they eat, the textures, flavours and quantities.

Emily’s Rice with Toppings

On the dining table, place one large bowl of freshly steamed rice (basmati rice is a low GI white rice, so a good choice). Allow everyone to serve themselves from the communal bowl.

Then, place smaller dishes of other items on the table, children can put what they like on top of the rice. Options include:

  • Freshly grated carrot
  • Peas (frozen or thawed!)
  • Tuna, chicken, boiled egg
  • Egg pancake made with soy and sugar
  • Sliced cucumber
  • Soy sauce
  • Torn seaweed
  • Or whatever else is in the fridge….the bottom line being is that if the only thing they eat is rice, you have NOT failed as a parent! And your child won’t be stressed at mealtime.
