Principal's Report

5/6 Camp - what a great adventure!!

I am very lucky today to be able to have the opportunity to be reporting in from the 5/6 camp in Foster. The students and staff are having a wonderful time, and being here, the benefits of camp absolutely shine through. Creating memories, building relationships, facing and overcoming challenges and enjoying time outside in nature are some of the reasons that we value school camps so highly.

For many of the students, this is one of their first times staying away from home. I know that this has been the source of anxiety (and excitement) for many students and their parents leading up to camp. Acknowledging the fear and anxiety we are feeling and then being able to work through how to overcome that is a really important skill that we need throughout our lives. To visit the camp on the second day, with students making it through that first anxious night away, it is great to see the confidence amongst the children and that they have been able to relax and really enjoy their time here on camp.

I hope that our 5/6 parents have a great time on Friday afternoon and over the weekend hearing the stories of camp being recounted by your children. And for families with younger children, our camps in yr 3-6 are something to really look forward to in the future.

Of course the wonderful experience of going on camp would not be possible without the amazing effort of the staff members who have gone on camp. The time and effort that goes into the planning and the support that the teachers and ES staff provide to the students 24 hours a day on camp is truly extraordinary. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of these staff members that have gone on the 5/6 camp.

Changes to our Reports

Teachers across the school are currently beginning the journey of creating comprehensive midyear reports about your child’s progress. These reports are one part of our reporting process, designed to complement Parent-Teacher interviews (in Terms 1 and 3). This year our Report Format has undergone changes, striving to provide you with detailed and targeted information about your child at their individual point of need.

The inclusion of Literacy and Numeracy checklists will provide you with individualised information about your child’s progress against the Victorian Curriculum. Your child’s report will provide a checklist of Curriculum Outcomes that best matches their progress in each strand (Reading, Writing, Speaking & Listening, Number & Algebra, Measurement & Geometry and Statistics and Probability).

Curriculum outcomes are marked on a scale of Consistently, Usually, Sometimes or Rarely. Teachers make these selections based on assessment data and anecdotal knowledge of your child. Because all students could be on any checklist at any time, this means that some areas of learning may not have been taught or assessed yet midyear.

These items, as well as items marked as Sometimes or Rarely, will be left blank and form part of your child’s next steps for learning.

A Learning Behaviours checklist is now included for all students F-6, indicating the Attitudes and Behaviours that they demonstrate at school. At Kalinda, we celebrate learning growth and effort just as much as we do academic achievement.

We look forward to providing you with further information closer to the publication of reports at the end of Term 2.
