Learning in J08

Ms Heather King

Junior School J08 King is sharing the learning taking place in their class…

In J08, students have been learning to partition 2 digit numbers into their tens and ones.  We have used icy pole sticks to show bundles of tens and loose ones.  We have then written clues to a 2 digit number to see if anyone can guess which 2 digit number we have made.  We wrote these in a mini flap book on an owl and made a tree with our mystery number owls.  Some students even learnt to partition 3 digit numbers.

See if you can guess this 2 digit number from these clues:  I am a 2 digit number, I have a 4 in my tens place and a 9 in my ones place.

What number am I?

In Reading, students have been learning to make inferences when they read.  We watched a special lesson that Mrs King made during lockdown last year.  This helped us use clues from the text and what we already know to make inferences - Making Inferences.

In Writing, students have been learning to write narratives and they have learnt to include characters, setting, the problem, and the resolution.

In Inquiry, we have been learning about the indigenous culture and have been learning about Dreamtime stories.  We have decorated a hand using dots and lines and this will be added to a large Year One display.  We also have an excursion coming up where we will travel to the Cranbourne Botanic Gardens to take part in their Indigenous Shared Country Program.  Students will discover the importance of the environment to the Koolin people and how plants were used for fibre, medicine tools, and food.  They will engage in a variety of experiences including a discovery walk, exploring tools, making and using ochre paint, and tasting Lemon Myrtle tea.
