Year 3 - Year 6

Assistant Principal's Report

Amy Jewell

I cannot believe how quickly this term is going… We have already accomplished six weeks of learning this term.

LEARNING TAKING PLACE AT THE SPRINGS…

In Mathematics, the Year 3 students have been learning to use the ‘Split’ strategy to solve subtraction problems.  The split strategy is when you slip a number into parts and subtract each part separately.  This strategy is useful to use when answering subtraction equations for bigger numbers.  An example of the Split strategy is below….

Year 4’s have been learning about division and how to use the ‘Bus Stop’ method (also known as short division) to help them correctly calculate division equations.  The ‘Bus Stop’ method is useful when completing division equations that have three or more numbers.

In Year 5, the students have been exploring area and perimeter - learning how to correctly calculate the area and perimeter of multiple shapes.  Students have learnt how to use scaled instruments to measure length and width and used formulas to assist them in calculating the area and perimeter of their house designs.

Year 6 students have focused on fractions, percentages and decimals.  They have been learning how to convert between fractions, decimals and percentages by using some of the strategies below.

Reading and Writing throughout Middle and Senior school continues to focus on Procedural texts.  Students have been given the opportunity to explore and compare multiple examples of exemplary procedural texts by participating in gallery walks.  Gallery walks encourage students to build on their knowledge about a specific topic and promote higher-order thinking and interaction between peers.  Teachers use this strategy to support students in identifying the key parts of procedural texts and it allows them to find the similarities and differences between high-quality writing pieces.

NATIONAL YOUNG LEADERS CONFERENCE…

I was privileged enough to be able to take our School Captains and Vice Captains to the National Young Leaders Conference last Monday…. And what an AWESOME time we had.  They joined over 3500 students from all over Victoria in the ‘Halogen Young Leaders Conference’ at the Melbourne Convention Centre.

They heard fantastic advice on leadership from Lachie Smart (youngest person to fly solo around the world), Jordan Lewis (4x Premiership Hawthorn/Melbourne player), Josh Pyke (ARIA award winner & Author),  Jimmy ‘Giggle’ Rees, and Deputy Fire Brigade Commissioner Michelle Young.

Our leaders also learnt how to hip hop with the help of the Australian Dance curriculum company.  They empower students to love learning and do their best.

Check-out their music videos… it’s very catchy: https://youtu.be/QO6der8d4L4

The key takeaways from the day were learning the importance of leadership and how to be a positive role model in your community.  Thanks for a marvellous day Springers Leaders!!

BUDDY BREAKFAST….

Whilst Buddy Breakfast was scheduled for Wednesday this week,  I would like to reassure the Year 6 students that we have postponed it until Wednesday in Week 8.  All of the Springers teaching staff are looking forward to having a bacon and egg roll with their Year 6 buddy’s next week.

I wish you all a wonderful and safe fortnight ahead.

Kindest Regards,

Amy Jewell
