Supporting our Indigenous Community
Wear It Yellow
ASC formally acknowledged National Reconciliation Week on Thursday, 28 May. A school-wide assembly was conducted under the leadership of Year 12 students Patricia Dixon and David Green. Mr Howey (HSIE) spoke at the Assembly about the significance of the day, and Support Unit students were involved in the flag-raising ceremony.
ASC students and staff were encouraged to participate in the Wear it Yellow for Children's Ground fundraiser. We raised $453.84 to donate to learning and wellbeing programmes in First Nations communities supported by Children's Ground.
Bangarra Dance Workshops
The ASC Aboriginal Dance programme is continuing this year with the support of Mrs Pearson and colleagues.
A highlight this term has been a series of five (5) online workshops with the highly acclaimed Bangarra Dance Company. Students were tutored on choreography and technique over the large TV screen in our CAPA studios. We enjoyed having 2020 Year 12 graduates, Jamelia Kelly and Katie Ahoy, join the workshops to guide and assist.
Our Aboriginal Dancers have also submitted an audition video for this year's Schools Spectacular ... fingers crossed for a positive decision early next term!
Staff Polo Shirts
ASC staff are proudly wearing their new shirts designed by Eden Love (Year 10).
Eden was selected as the winner of the design competition initiated last year by our Aboriginal Engagement team. His eye-catching entry is based on carefully thought-out elements:
"I aimed to consolidate symbolic articles from the school and connect with Indigenous Australian's ancient culture. I was inspired by the importance of birds in Aboriginal culture and their prominence in paintings, dances and stories ... Our ASC mascot, Reggie, the wedge-tailed eagle also influenced my artwork. Further, 'wings' are a reward system within our school. The patterns covering the feathers are symbols of ancient Indigenous culture. Throughout high school, students experience highs and lows. I try communicating this through the journey path, which is expressed by the wavy lines. Whilst the concentric circles symbolise a place in which all people come together as equals, it's a portrayal of our inclusive community at ASC. I tried drawing in groups of three to mirror the school's three core values: respect, responsibility and resilience."
Congratulations Eden on your superb design!
