A call from the Dardanelles
Recently 9HSIE Red answered the call to arms, enlisted in either the Australian New Zealand Army Corps or the Ottoman Army, and waged war against each other! In other words, classmates re-enacted the Gallipoli campaign as a part of their study into Australia’s involvement in both World Wars.
They began by researching the battles fought from April – December 1915. Students made notes on the dates of each battle, ground gained, casualties, as well as marking significant locations and movements of each side on their maps.
The class was then split into two groups - ANZACs and Ottomans - and directed under the guidance of commanding officer Colonel Graham (not a real commander in the actual war 😊). Using a 3D map of the Gallipoli peninsula and toy soldiers (representational of those who fought), the two sides re-enacted the campaign battle by battle.
Colonel Graham was impressed with student participation as they worked well in their groups and executed their knowledge of the campaign with success.

Deutshe Kunst (German Art)
8German2 let their creative sides out last week trying their hands at Scherenschnitte. This is the German art of paper cutting. Typically this art form is used for making decorations for holidays such as Christmas and began in the 1600s. Designs can be very simple or extremely detailed. Students chose a design they liked and drew them. They then had to decide which parts would be cut from their designs out to make a silhouette.
