Visual Arts

Here comes another busy term in the art room!

Prep, Grade 1 and 2:

Students ended term 3 with some potato printing, creating and learning about patterns and shapes, as well as experimenting with paint application and mixing. They have started term 4 learning or revising how to draw, paint, print and cut different types of lines. They have participated in 'line stations' working with lines in four different ways; making prints using cardboard and paint, using scissors to cut different line shapes, working with dot markers and also paint slicks. We incorporated mathematical concepts of chance by using dice and spinning wheels to dictate which line markings to use.

Later in the term, students will produce a 3D spider or pumpkin paper sculpture in the lead up to Halloween, we look forward to displaying these in time for the Writer's Festival.

Grade 3 and 4:

Students at the end of last term practiced printmaking using sponges to create realistic brick walls as a background for their graffiti initials. They used paper to make a paint blob to create what is known as a "throwie" in the graffiti world. Students have now assembled their final graffiti art pieces and completed a self assessment. They have worked with a range of materials and resources to create these pieces. We have had rich and robust discussions about whether or not graffiti is art of vandalism - we'll leave you to decide!

Later in the term, students will learn about First Nations Peoples artwork, particularly dot paintings, and create some dot paintings of their own. Incorporated into this work will be some 3D Australian animals, which the students are excited about.

Grade 5 & 6:

The end of last term and the beginning of term 4 has seen students putting final touches on their Steampunk sculptures and completing self-assessments of their artwork as well as the techniques learned and used. Students have proudly displayed their sculptures throughout the Grade 5 & 6 corridor.

These students have now begun a unit on the Mexican holiday "Day of the Dead" (Dia los Muertos) by creating 2D paper sugar skulls with paint markers and food dye paint. Students have demonstrated drawing skills by following a skull drawing tutorial and will now spend time adding personalised decoration to these skulls, before commencing the painting and presentation aspects of the project. We hope to have these completed in time for display at the Writer's Festival.

Later in the term, Grade 5 students will embark on a printmaking unit drawing inspiration from Vincent van Gogh's Starry Night, whilst the Grade 6s will create some special acetate self-portraits in celebration of their graduation.
