Year 5 Report

Term 4 2022

We welcome you all to Term Four with mixed emotions. What a year it has been. Developing deep connections with each student is a vital aspect of their social, emotional and educational growth, and this year it has been our pleasure to grow in all these areas with your children. Consequently, although we are excited about Term Four, we are also saddened that it is our last term together.

The students will continue exploring their emotions and learning to recognise how they express those emotions through their body language. They will also explore how individuals experience changing emotions and the changing intensity of emotions. The students will be presented with a range of scenarios to discuss how they might react in certain situations and explain why.

During English, the students will be exposed to several leadership speeches written by other students their age. They will listen to and read these speeches to identify the structure and language features to create their own leadership speeches. Interested students will be given the opportunity to present these speeches to teachers and their peers if they wish to be a Grade Six leader. During the second half of the term the students will be immersed in science fiction and encouraged to create their own narratives on this topic. Later in the term, we will introduce the students to Reciprocal Reading. Reciprocal reading is a structured method of guided reading where children gradually learn to take on group roles to explore and find meaning in texts. It emphasises teamwork and supports independent comprehension skills.

The main Maths focus in Term Four will be fractions and decimals. The students will compare fractions, identify them on a number line, investigate equivalent fractions, and recognise that the place value system extends to tenths, hundredths and thousandths. They will also be making connections between fractions and decimal notation. Finally, they will investigate strategies to solve problems involving the addition and subtraction of fractions with the same denominator.

For Inquiry this term, students explore countries of Asia and the connections Australia has with these and other countries. Students learn about the diversity of the world's people, including the Indigenous Peoples of other countries. Students will explore and reflect upon similarities, differences, and the importance of intercultural understanding.
