Year 10 Catering: Hospitality Immersion Day
North-East Victoria has many fine and varied opportunities for careers in the food and hospitality industry. On Monday 24th October, our Year 10 Catering students recently joined with Galen College VET students to participate in the Hospitality Immersion Day. The excursion, sponsored by NE Tracks LLEN, highlighted some of the career opportunities open to students in the hospitality industry in the immediate area.
The excursion started with a cheese taste testing at the Milawa Cheese Factory. For many students this was the first time they had tried goat’s milk and blue vein cheese. Our host, Kellie Wiedemann explained the history of the venue and how it had expanded over the years.
From there it was on to the beautiful surrounds of Lindenwarrah (Lancemore) in Milawa for a comprehensive overview of restaurant and hotel operations. Janet Mosley from the Lancemore Group clearly explained the varied tasks and roles involved in operating the establishment, from Front to Back of House operations, functions, restaurant, housekeeping, just to name a few.
It was back on the bus through the beautiful King Valley, past many and varied hospitality establishments, to Cheshunt, for lunch at Chrismont Cellar Door, Restaurant and Larder. Here students experienced fine dining in a beautiful setting, with the opportunity to ask questions about career opportunities, life in the industry, customer service and more from owner/restaurateur, Jo Pizzini.
The day was a great success, and the students gained some insights into the wonderful opportunities available in our region.
