Two weeks of swimming is almost over! We have been incredibly proud of the way the boys have handled the last two weeks of swimming, particularly the walk to and from the pool. In week one we dodged 110km winds, rain, and hail. This week we have battled the heat. Fortunately, it is only a 1.3km walk to the pool, which has been averaging each class about 20 minutes. Along the way to the pool there have been rich conversations taking place between the boys, and staff. Their behaviour at the pool has been exemplary, and the Collegiate Pool staff have noted how well organised, behaved, and respectful our boys have been over the two-week period. Well done everyone!
I’m excited to announce the team of teachers at the Junior School for 2023. Next year, our Early Year classes will expand to include Year 1. This has necessitated employing two early years trained teachers, as Mrs Anne-Marie McLennan will leaving our Tasmanian shores to return to her home state of Queensland with her family. Mr Eric Monaghan will be returning to Immaculate Heart Catholic School, after his 12-month appointment here at SVC in Grade 6. We welcome on board for 2023, Ms Stacey King and Mrs Connie Abate and look forward to them joining our staff. All boys will have the opportunity to meet their new teacher on Orientation Day. We have met as a team to discuss class placements for Grade 6 for 2023 and will finalise these after Orientation Day has taken place.

The SRC will be selling ‘fair food’ in Week 5, which is November 14-18. Each day we will have a different ‘food theme.’ The week will commence with Milkshake Monday, Treats Tuesday, Wedges Wednesday, Thirsty Thursday and Fairy Floss Friday. All money raised will go into the kitty of the P&F to be re-invested into a worthwhile cause at the school. The SRC, as part of their commitment to the SRC, will be making, baking, cooking all the while to prepare the Tasty Treats for Tuesday. Prices have been advertised on an edsmart notification. Thank you to any P&F parents who have volunteered to help during the week.
We have had some fabulous prizes donated so far to the P and F Christmas Raffle. A $500 voucher for Tracy Vagg Photography, $100 voucher for Syra Restaurant (donated by the Assi family), a TCL Sound Bar to the value of $299 donated from Mark Chivers at Betta World Electrical, a $30 voucher from These Pretty Ones (donated by Karryn McCullagh), a Junior Flyer Pack (donated from by the Mann family). If any other donations could be handed in by Tuesday November 15, it would be appreciated so we can commence organising and selling tickets.
Tickets will be $5.00 each or 3 for $10.00.
Congratulations to all of our athletes who have participated in the STCPSSA and JSSATIS athletics carnivals over the last two Thursdays. Yesterday the athletes competed in difficult conditions as the conditions were hot! Thank you, Mrs McCullagh, Mr Beard and Mrs Read who have accompanied the boys on both occasions. Their behaviour, participation and efforts have been exceptional.
This week meet I have had the pleasure of sitting down with all the students who have an ambition to be the next Junior School Captain or Vice-Captain in 2023. This is the second step in the process, after the boys had written a letter of application. The next stage in the process is on Monday November 14 at 8.45 am, the boys will be required to deliver a speech to the Junior School I an assembly. Following this, all Junior boys will be required to vote using the voting form that has been created. The Junior School Captain and Vice-Captain will be announced prior to Tuesday December 6, which is when the leadership handover will take place.
By the time the next newsletter goes to print, the Year 6s will be on their third day visiting our nation’s Capital, Canberra and Years 5s will be on their second camp day at Port Arthur. I would like to wish all boys across both years groups all the best for their respective journeys as well as the staff who will be accompanying them. I also look forward to sharing some photos with you from both trips.
Last week we distributed a letter containing information about all events which are on the horizon. Orientation Day is a system wide day which all school will be hosting. It is an opportunity for us to welcome all our new students into the Junior School, so they can meet their respective teachers and fellow classmates. We will be welcoming on board our two new teachers, Ms King and Mrs Abate, for the Early Years morning orientation. Our current Grade 6 boys will be spending the day at the secondary campus for their Year 7 Orientation Day.
A reminder that our annual End of Year Assembly is Wednesday December 7 in the Nagle Centre at St Mary's College between 9.30 am and 11.00 am for students in Kindergarten, Prep and Grade 3 to 6.
We will continue to sell ice creams on Thursdays at lunch time this term, including during Learn to Swim. Please note that ice creams will not be for sale in Week 6 (November 24). The money raised supports charities such as St Vincent de Paul and also goes towards equipment for our playground.
