Marine Ambassadors

Crabs and Nurdles Excursion

The Marine Ambassadors group participated in a ‘Crabs and Nurdles’ excursion to Ricketts Point on Friday 9 November. Over the last few years students in this group have been involved in the monitoring of crab species on the reefs at Ricketts Point. Student have developed their own Crab Identification Guides and have collected data on species, size, and sex of the crabs they find. In particular they have been interested in the presence of two introduced species - the European Shore Crab and the Asian Shore Crab.

Additionally, students were also involved in collecting data on the presence of nurdles on the beach at Ricketts Point. Nurdles are very small plastic pellets that find their way to our beaches and can pose a risk to marine wildlife. The students have done a fantastic job of contributing to the health of our local Marine Sanctuary.
