What's happening in our classroom

Reading

The preps have been reading a lot of books and having discussions about the stories they read through a story retell. They can identify the main characters and key ideas of the story as they sequence the events that happen. Students are presented with many opportunities for reading during independent reading time, guided reading groups, teacher led story time and reading at home. Students have also been working hard, and practising their sight words daily which is reflected in their reading, spelling and writing.

In the next unit we will be focusing on non-fiction texts and writing information reports.

Writing

This term, our foundation students have moved into writing information texts which links well with our inquiry focus on science this term. Students have been focusing on sorting ideas into the big idea of the text and then identifying the smaller groups that fit into that big idea. Students then use the descriptive perspectives of colour, number, position, size, texture and doing to describe each group. Our prep students have been working extremely hard to devise detailed texts and transferring their knowledge of letters, sounds and grammar into their writing. We are extremely proud of what they have achieved so far!

Maths

During maths, students have been exploring capacity with different types of units and measuring containers. They have been comparing and ordering what holds less and what holds more. Students have had the opportunity to play in the sandpit, use water and rice bubbles to demonstrate their knowledge of capacity. Students have also applied their numeracy skills of addition and subtraction through real life stories and problems. They are becoming curious learners as they make connections between maths concepts and the real world.

Inquiry

This term, our foundation students have been focussing on Earth and Space Science for our inquiry unit. After completing Lesson Zero which focussed on identifying the big idea behind our unit as well as capturing what students already know and what they are curious about, the prep teaching team have devised a series of lessons that reflect our students’ ideas and curiosities. Students have been working at stations that focus on building their own understanding of the concepts of day and night, the seasons and the sustainability of Earth’s resources through engaging activities centred around Bloom’s Taxonomy. Our students are very excited and are developing a deep understanding through engaging, hands on tasks.
