Year Five/Six News

Another busy couple of weeks in Year 5/6:

Reading:

We have been learning about figurative language, author point of view and subjective and objective language in texts. We learnt how to identify these literary devices in everyday texts and novels. We are beginning to use them effectively in our own writing.

Writing:

We are making our writing sharper and more descriptive by changing and adding better words and adjectives to our sentences. We looked at making our nouns more precise and our adjectives more expressive. We have also revisited complex sentences by identifying again what a dependent and independent clause is.

Maths:

We concluded last week with our last week of fractions, decimals and percentages. We learnt how to add and subtract fractions with different denominators, simplify fractions, convert between fractions, decimals and percentages and more. It was a great unit and our students showed great learning growth. This week we started learning about chance and probability. We have been playing a range of games where the outcomes are different and naming the probabilities of each outcome.

Integrated Studies:

We are still mad with natural disasters in 5/6. We finished our learning on floods and bush fires and have begun looking at how droughts occur and the cause and effect on them. Next week we will begin to explore earthquakes. In week 6 we will be learning about volcanoes, therefore we ask if families could please collect and send in 2L empty plastic bottles (soft drink is fine) and old newspapers if possible.
