DEVOTION

Treasure in Heaven

Over the past two weeks in Worship, we have heard from students in 5B and 2B about the importance of focusing on God rather than on earthly possessions. As 5B explained, possessions aren’t bad in and of themselves; rather, it is when these things become our focus that it is problematic. Instead of spending our lives trying to gain more, God calls us to be thankful for what we have and to live in such a way that our thankfulness overflows into generosity towards others.

In Matthew 6:21 Jesus tells us, ‘Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.’ He knows that what we value is reflected in how we live. The students in 2B presented some short skits to teach us how to build up treasure in heaven rather than with things on earth. We are often faced with choices in life. We can put ourselves first, or we can put others first. We can live for ourselves, or we can live for God. When we live the way God wants us to, showing love, kindness and forgiveness towards others, we store up treasure in heaven. Unlike our earthly possessions, this is treasure that no one can take away from us. It is the treasure of a growing relationship with Jesus, and the promise that one day, we will see him face to face and be with him for eternity. What an incredible treasure!
