Xanthe St Clair
Major Work in Textiles
Theme: Coral bleaching
Aim: to visually represent the process of bleaching so colours of the garment fade from vibrant to white.
Xanthe has designed and made a bodice with long frilled sleeves to mirror the ocean waves. This is accompanied by a long skirt with train that illuminates the underwater damage being done to the coral, again starting with high value colour and descending into a despair of white.
Textiles is a demanding yet rewarding creative and practical subject allowing for individual flair and discipline.
Please enjoy the imaginative response from Tina Fan, a Year 11 Extension 1 Student. The unit of study is called Encounters with The Other” and explores people and cultures who hold significantly different values and beliefs to ours. The assessment task was designed to gauge students’ ability to capture this understanding in a creative and authentic manner.
Tina has done an excellent job of creating pathos and empathy through skilled and disciplined writing. Click on the link below to view:
On 2-3 June the Kinross Wolaroi debaters competed in the final round of competition. This week the Middle teams debated against the notion that it is the owner’s choice to fence their backyard pool arguing the importance of government mandates to enforce safety. The KWS 1 year 8 team had a convincing win against Scots All Saints Bathurst. Unfortunately, the KWS 2 team from year 7 were narrowly defeated against Macquarie Anglican Grammar Dubbo. In the senior Division the KWS 1 Year 9 team argued against banning nicotine making it an illegal Drug on the grounds that it would cause more overall harm to society and would not stop smoking. They were successful in their arguments defeating Macquarie Anglican Grammar. The KWS 2 had a bye this week and have finished competition undefeated.
In the Opens Division the year 11 KWS 1 and KWS 2 debated each other arguing the topic that both parents and children should be held legally responsible for bullying. Both teams argued their cases vehemently and their skills rhetoric and debate were of a high standard. There was a narrow margin of one point between teams with KWS 2 arguing for the negative were deemed more convincing and declared the winner.
After the completion of five rounds of HICES debating the Senior KWS 2 and the Opens KWS 2 have qualified for the preliminary finals after being declared winners in their division.
Last term Year 11 and Year 12 Agriculture and Primary Industries students travelled to Trangie to participate in the Big Tech Field Day which was created by the LLS (Local Land Services). This was an opportunity for our senior students to see first hand the technologies that are being adapted and employed in many areas across Agriculture. Australian Agriculture is one of the most dynamic and ever-evolving industries and the use of technology is allowing Australian producers to become even more efficient, profitable and sustainable. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to conduct first hand research into technologies that they can use for the Farming for the 21st Century HSC option that we are working through this term. A huge thanks to Neroli Brennan for identifying this opportunity for us, it was the first time LLS had presented this field day and we are grateful for the chance to participate.
