What's happening in our classroom

The Grade 3 students have had an extremely busy first half of Term 3. Our classrooms have been a hive of activity as students are working extremely hard. We are very proud of the amazing work and efforts that the students have put in. They loved participating in the Italian morning where they got the opportunity to play bocce, waiters race, Italian dancing, spaghetti eating competition, eating Italian food, toga dress ups and pasta jewellery making. Check out the photos below!

Literacy

Explanation texts

To start off Term 3, the students have been learning about explanation texts. They learnt about the structure of an explanation and the features that they need to include when writing one. The students investigated time connectives that they could use when writing an explanation sequence. They learnt to use conjunctions that transform two simple  sentences into a compound sentence. They also gained an understanding of how to use adjectives and adverbs, after various activities, to make their writing more interesting. The students were able to write an explanation report on How Paper is Recycled and How a Seed Grows. We will now continue with information reports which will enable the students to use their learning in another text type.

The students have shown a great improvement with their letter formation and handwriting by participating in our weekly handwriting sessions.

Mathematics

This term, students are continuing to focus on addition and subtraction as well as learning about multiplication and division, data and location.

Students have continued to learn about addition and subtraction through the use of number lines, MAB and by applying various number strategies learnt in class. They have used all of this knowledge when working on multiplication and division. We have learnt about arrays, repeated addition, groups of and multiplication facts. Students are really enjoying learning all about location. They have learnt about bird's eye view, directions, coordinates and how to use and read maps. Grade 3’s  have gone on a “Mackellar Treasure Hunt” which was a lot more difficult than what they thought!!

Inquiry

It has been a very, very busy term so far! Our School Wide Positive Behaviour (SWPB) sessions have focused on the value of respect. We have been completing lessons using the Bullying Prevention positive behaviour support program where students have been learning strategies to prevent disrespectful behaviour.

Students have been learning about biological science during our inquiry sessions. They have enjoyed developing their knowledge of the different levels of Blooms and how they can use these to demonstrate how they have successfully learnt the concepts within the standard. Students are studying how to identify and classify living and non living things. They were able to construct texts about the life cycle of living things and how these living things depend on each other and their environment to survive.

They are extremely excited about our excursion to the Melbourne Zoo and their very first camp to Mount Evelyn!! We can’t wait to share all our exciting photos and news in the coming weeks!
