Year 10 Dance Class at Pilates

On Monday, 1 of August 2022, the Year 10 Dance class at Cranbourne attended an excursion at Somerville Myotherapy and Pilates Studio as a part of their safe dance practices unit of work. The barre/mat Pilates class was run by past St. Peter’s student Kim, who is now a Pilates instructor. The class focused on strength, conditioning and stretching - all of which are focuses of the Year 10 Dance curriculum. The students completed exercises to increase core strength and improve posture, balance and enhance body awareness and positivity. Students found the excursion challenging, yet fun. Below are some student reflections on the excursion:

‘I enjoyed pushing myself and experiencing things I’ve never experienced before’

- Karin Chan

‘I really enjoyed my experience today, I definitely think I have challenged myself and overall had a great time’

- Eloise Clarisse

‘I had a great time today at Pilates with the fabulous Kim who hosted our lesson today. I definitely challenged myself and would recommend Pilates to anyone who is up for a challenge’

- Tarsha Scalzo

VCAL Update - Clyde North Campus

As part of the Year 12 Personal Development Skills Course, students were required to ‘take action’ in a project to address one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The idea is that students choose and research a particular goal and then look at ways they can help reach the goal or promote awareness around each goal.

The most recent excursion involved a beach clean-up with community partner 3199 Beach Patrol to address the goal of Life Below Water. With around 95% of rubbished dropped in the Port Philip catchment ends up in the bay. The day involved a clean-up of Frankston Beach and surrounding areas, even in winter there was still a significant amount of rubbish including a larger range of plastics. Students collected a total of 7 Kg of rubbish! This was such a worthwhile initiative.

We look forward to our other projects which have include the Year 10 Reflection Lunch fundraiser, an Earth Hour, food collection, soup day fundraiser, migration story incursion, and a native planting day to name a few.

The Year 10's have been busy in Work Related Skills preparing for the latest planting of crops to supply the Hospitality Centre. Students learnt about composting as well as preparing for different seasons and growing a variety of fruit, veggies and herbs. The Year 10's are also took part in their AFL Sport Unit attending an excursion to the MCG Sport Museum, where they took part in a tour of the MCG, explored the ‘Game On’ exhibit and visited the Sport Museum. Students are busy putting together their presentation for their Cert II in Public Safety- Fire Fighting Operations, where students will present on topics such as Fire Safety in the Workshop, BBQ Safety, Bush Fire and Grass Fire Safety, House Fires and Vehicle Fires.

"From the College Archives"

Bishop Jeremiah Coffey was Bishop of Sale from 1989 to 2008. As such, he was the Bishop that presided over much of the early development of St. Peter's College and blessed several of the College buildings including the Breen, Clancy, and Tarraville buildings.

Bishop Coffey was born in Cork on January 1, 1933. He attended University College, Dublin, where he was awarded a Bachelor of Arts and then studied for the priesthood at the famous All Hallows College where priests were ordained to serve as missionaries in foreign dioceses. When he chose to come to Australia, he specifically chose the Diocese of Sale because it was near the sea (much like his homeland, Cork). Like Fr. James McGuigan, Coffey was one of the many Irish Priests who ministered in the Diocese of Sale.

He arrived in Sale Diocese on September 15, 1958, and served in the parishes of Bairnsdale, Sale, Traralgon, Omeo, Iona, and Yallourn, prior to being appointed the first parish priest of Churchill, which had separated from Morwell Parish.

Pope John Paul II appointed him seventh Bishop of Sale on April 8, 1989.

Sir Frank Little, Archbishop of Melbourne consecrated Bishop Coffey in a massive marquee on the grounds of St. Patrick's Campus of Sale Catholic College (now Catholic College Sale) on June 30, 1989. Co-consecrators were his predecessor Archbishop Eric D'Arcy of Hobart and Bishop David Cremin, a Sydney auxiliary bishop, who was also a former student of All Hallows.

He retired as Bishop on January 2, 2008. St. Peter’s College named the Coffey Building, Clyde North Campus, in his honour. His name also appears on several plaques attached to St. Peter's College buildings.

We remember the work of Bishop Coffey for the people of the Diocese of Sale, Cranbourne, and Clyde North.
