Grade 1/2 News

Term 1, Week 4

Reminders:

  • Please ensure your child brings to school their reading satchel and books each day. This is important as students also use these books during the school day as their reading material.
  • If you have bought your child some news items to start the year e.g. lunchbox, jumper, hat etc. please make sure they are clearly labelled with your child's name.

What we have been up to...

In Mathematics last week got back into some problem solving! It was awesome to see students having a go and working collaboratively with their peers to solve the following problem - 'Five students have 21 counters between them. All students have a different numbers of counters. How many counters might each student have?' We saw lots of different strategies used to tackle this problem but in the end the most popular seemed to be 'draw a diagram' and 'make a model.'

We were very proud of our students and the way they participated in our 'Start up Performance' last Friday morning. It was great to see everyone having some fun and trying their best! Thank you to the many family and friends in our school community who were able to support us on the day.

Learning in Weeks 5 & 6

Mathematics:  During weeks 5 and 6 students will practise describing, building, recognising and continuing patterns. We will also focus on 2 - dimensional shapes exploring the names and characteristics of different shapes.

English: Our reading sessions will focus on the strategy 'Chunk letters and sounds together'. This strategy encourages students to look for known parts in a word, rather than reading sound by sound. For example the word cat, could be read as c - a - t or can be read in known chunks as c - at.

Students will explore the sounds 'ai - as in snail' and 'ee - as in bee', recognising that there are different spelling choices for the long /a/ and /e/ sounds.

During writing lessons students will be practising writing personal recounts and exploring the features of a narrative text and then applying these to writing their own stories.

Topic: In topic we will look at the concepts of safety, responsible risk taking and understanding emotions.
