Grade 5/6 News

Term 1, Week 4

Welcome!

What a busy, yet awesome, start to the year! We are finally getting into some regular curriculum after our 'Start up' weeks when the focus was more about getting to know each other, revisiting class and school wide expectations, and having an amazing time on camp! We are looking forward to a fun year of learning in 2023.

Homework

Homework this week is due on Friday and is a maths task. Next week students will complete a literacy task instead of the usual Talk Homework, as students will complete a Caold Write assessment next week instead of a Big Write. The expectation is that students complete 2 hours of reading each week as well as these homework tasks and that their homework is signed by a parent/guardian.

Learning in Weeks 5 & 6

In reading, we will are looking at some Comprehension strategy like sumarising, checking for understanding and asking questions throughout the reading process. It is important that we re-visit these skills regularly to become stronger readers.

We are currently focussing on narrative writing and students are excited to be writing stories. WE will look at the many different ways we can raise the interest level of our writing for a reader, such as punctuation use, word choice and, of course, a great idea.

In Mathematics, we will be practicing our number skills through an authentic real-life problem that will span several classes. Learning maths through more realisitic problem solving adds value to the skills being developed and helps students better understand their context. As teachers, we will be learning more about these tasks as the year progresses.

Grade 5/6 Camp

Everyone had an amazing time at UPCC and I think everyone will agree that the highlight was a day spent at Fun Fields on the way home. As always, we were incredibly proud of the conduct of students and there bravery on some rather terrifying rides (or maybe they just seemed scary to us old teachers). We have attached a few more photos photos of the camp and Fun Fields.
