Welcome to Careers

The Careers Office is located next to Student Services. The Careers Coordinators for 2023 are Tim Kogelman and Kristy Mays.

The Coordinators are available to assist students to make informed decisions about career choices and choices for study.

Throughout the year, all students are seen individually or in groups regarding career information, subject choices and study skills.

The following timeline details some of the career programs that students will take part in this year.

LHS School Careers Website

The Lilydale High School Careers Website (available on the school website homepage under Careers) contains a large amount of information and should be your first stop when you are looking for information on anything job, careers, university and TAFE related (and there is so much more). The site has a specific area where students can log into and complete skills and interest tests.

By the end of Term 1, all students will receive an email with log in instructions to access the student area of this site. It is here that they will be able to complete their Career Action Plan, which allows them to set education and employment goals and review their skills, interests and ambitions.

School Leaving Age

From January 1 2010, the Government brought in new requirements for the school leaving age.

Before a student is allowed to leave school they must satisfactorily complete Year 10 and until the age of 17, they must be in some form of full time training or employment.

Training options can include:

VCE
VCAL
Full Time TAFE
Apprenticeship

Any students wishing to leave school before these requirements are met must put in a request for exemption to the Regional Director in consultation with Lilydale High School.

All students leaving school before the end of Year 12 are required to fill in an exit form and complete a Careers appointment.

Leaving school or not attending school can result in non-payment of Centrelink benefits.

Work Experience

Students from Years 10 to 12 have the opportunity this year to undertake Work Experience to develop their awareness of appropriate attitudes and behaviour in real work environments, to explore employment and career options, to develop contacts with potential employers and to observe the use made of skills taught in school subjects.

Work Experience at Lilydale High School can occur at any time within the school year for up to 5 school days or 10 days, utilising part or all of the school holidays.

Students interested in completing Work Experience should speak to a Careers Practitioner who will inform them of necessary processes and forms required to complete Work Experience.

Year 12 Careers Interviews

Year 12 students are meeting with Careers staff this term to discuss their future plans, be it employment, an apprenticeship or further study at TAFE or university. Students are reminded to check Compass for their scheduled interview and to update their Career Action Plan on the LHS Careers Website prior to their session.

ALL students will be scheduled one compulsory session to speak with the Careers Staff; however, if they need additional support, an appointment can be made directly with Student Services.

Weekly Career News for VCE students

Every week, a Career News newsletter is posted on the Year 11 and Year 12 Google Classroom Careers Stream. In the newsletter is a range of information relating to different types of careers, apprenticeships, tertiary study at TAFE and university, the Defence Force and emergency services and a wide range of other relevant information for VCE students.

The Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA)

World-class degrees in Business, Engineering, Computing, Arts and Science

Based in Canberra, students who join ADFA have a unique opportunity to receive advanced military and leadership training whilst studying a range of degrees from the University of New South Wales (UNSW).

ADFA also offers students a salary while they study, allowing them to focus throughout their degrees and enjoy a range of sporting and extra-curricular activities without the need to get a part-time job.

Upon graduation students are guaranteed a career in the Navy, Army or Air Force and will have their degree fully funded, graduating HELP-debt free. Students who graduate from ADFA move into a range of exciting and varied jobs as Officers, these range from Pilots, Civil Engineers, Logistics and Finance Officers, Mission Controllers and much more.

With the increasing accessibility of free AI platforms, fresh grads with AI skills are in serious demand. In Australia, just over 20% of startups say AI is relevant to what they do, and by 2030 we we'll need an extra 161,000 AI specialists to fill yet-to-be advertised jobs.

VU Sport April School Holiday Program

The upcoming VU Sport School Holiday Sports Program is looking to recruit new coaches for our April program. This program is suitable for someone looking to complete Year 10 Work Experience, or those looking for work over the school holiday break.

The School Holiday Sports Program runs a range of sports; including multisport, soccer, basketball, netball, and AFL. The program is for children aged 5 and 12 years, and is a great opportunity for young adults to explore the coaching and teaching world.

In order to be eligible for the role, we require you to have – or be willing to obtain – a WWCC, First Aid, and CPR certificate.

The dates for the program are;

Tuesday April 11th – Friday April 14th Monday April 17th – Friday April 21st

Note: You do not need to be available every day of the program to be eligible for the position. Participation in the program may lead to ongoing work each school holidays.

Work Experience Opportunity

WEHI (the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research) is this year offering two separate intake weeks for its Secondary School Work Experience Program.

Year 10 students aged 15 and over can now apply for the Secondary School Work Experience Program (applications close, 15 March 2022)
The five-day program will include two separate intake weeks (19–23 June and 11–15 September). Each intake is for students to maximise access to key lab equipment and deliver a quality learning experience
Students who are successful in their applications will be allocated one of the two intake groups

Deakin Campus Tours 2023

There's only one way to choose a uni - you've got to experience it yourself. Deakin Campus Tours will allow your students and their families to experience their preferred Deakin University campus through a tailored tour, during the April school holidays. Guests will join a 1-hour tour led by our knowledgeable and friendly student ambassadors to get a first-hand look at our world-class facilities and have all their study questions answered.

Introducing Year 10 students to engineering and technology concepts and issues through our interactive workshops.

Workshops will be held during the April school holidays, 12 to 14. Students can participate in a full free day of workshops.

Yarra Ranges Tech School Jewellery Making Workshop

We have an exciting Jewellery Making Workshop on Tuesday 7 March, from 4 pm to 5:30 pm, for all secondary school aged students (12 to 17 years).

The students will be able to create pendants, earrings, bracelets, laser cut their own designs and make anything they like! Anything they make they will be able to keep!

The cost of the workshop $10 and covers all materials for the session.

An introduction to myfuture (for Parents and Carers)

Wednesday 8 March

1:00 pm – 2:00 pm

Myfuture is a government website that can assist in helping your child determine their career pathway. They are providing a free webinar to provide information to parents and carers.

This webinar will be an introduction/refresher to the myfuture career information service. The presenter will demonstrate how the platform can be a useful tool in career and transition planning, highlighting resources that are most relevant to your child/ren. This will include reference to myfuture’s psychometric career interest test (My career profile), the occupation and course information, videos, pathway infographics, and resources mapped to the Australian Curriculum Work Studies sub-strands.

This webinar aims to provide attendees with confidence to support their child/ren with their career exploration.
