Careers Update

Welcome to the 2023 academic year!

For those of you who may not know me, I am the Careers Coordinator at Bayside Christian College.

The Careers Office is currently located in P12 (on the North campus) in the ARTS building.  Students are encouraged to make an appointment/booking during school hours for advice and resources or to discuss any concerns regarding their pathway or subject choice.

Now that we are settling into the term, the key focus will be careers  meetings with the senior secondary student cohort.  These meetings allow me to get to know the students and engage in a conversation about their pathway and intentions for future study or work.

Year 10 Careers Meeting

In this time, we discuss Work Experience planning, Allwell Careers results and general pathways and careers questions.

Year 11 Check-in Meeting

In this time we discuss Progress to date, General pathways and careers questions

Year 12 Transition Meeting

In this time we discuss Progress to date,

Plans for next year, Ways in which I can provide support along with some key dates and reminders.

VCE Subject Changes

As we are now at the end of week 2 and basically 4 weeks into our VCE subjects, if any students are thinking about changing their subject selections it needs to be done now.

Every lesson delayed is time in your new class that you miss (and work you need to catch up).  Students are encouraged to approach either Mr Chris Alley or myself to discuss available subject options. If a longer consultation is required to discuss future study implications, students are encouraged to book an appointment via my calendly link - Michelle Smith - Careers booking

VET Courses

Most of our VET students have commenced their courses this week. In the coming weeks VET students will be added to a CANVAS Page specifically to communicate general information from the course providers.

Once students receive the invitation to join this class they are encouraged to make sure settings are activated to receive all notifications.

Parents will also have access to the announcements on this CANVAS page.  As a quick reminder, if you are sick or will be absent from your VET course, you need to contact your trainer prior to your class time.

Work Placements (Structured Workplace Learning - SWL)

It is encouraged that students enrolled in VET courses are engaged in Structured Workplace Learning (SWL).  SWL gives students the opportunity to gain practical hands-on experience in the industry of their VET Course.

All VM (Vocational Major) students are required to be engaged in some form of practical employment in the industry they are studying.  If students are having difficulty securing a placement they are encouraged to speak to Mr Ken Berry (Head of VM) about possible options.
