2023 School Captains

Mya, Neave, Mia and Minne

Introducing our new Captains

We are very excited to be the 2023 school captains of Northcote High School. This year we are hoping to amplify students' voices from all year levels and put their ideas into action.

I'm Mya Helou, and this year I want to focus on providing students with better tailored resources for things like mental health, sex education, and preparation for after high school. I also want to create a less stressful transition as students move up in years, and address bullying and discrimination to generate a more positive school experience for everyone.

My name is Neave McKenzie-Poole and I’m one of the Year 12 Captains this year. In the past I’ve spoken up within the school about issues such as the culture around consent and toxic masculinity. This year I want to focus on making school somewhere everyone is included and feels like they belong, including the younger year levels. Looking forward to the year ahead!

I’m Mia Ison, as well as strengthening student voice, I would like to further reconciliation at Northcote High and incorporate aspects of Indigenous culture into the curriculum. I would also like to try and support senior students as much as possible through their final years.

I’m Minnie O’Sullivan, this year I am hoping to implement Auslan at Northcote High School. Most students don’t know basic Auslan, purely because they have not had the opportunity to learn. Having a program in tutorial to be dedicated to learning Auslan will open social interactions within Northcote high students and the wider community. This is a genuine gateway to empathy by immersing us all in experiencing the world in a radically different way.
