Thank you for your participation in the South Australian Meningococcal B Vaccine Herd Immunity Study (B Part of It) https://www.bpartofit.com.au/

The High School Study has now been completed and some of the preliminary study results are listed below:

  • Over 711 school visits took place by immunisation providers
  • In 2017 and 2018, during April, May and June, over 55,700 throat swabs were collected from study participants.
  • Over 58,000 doses of Men B (Bexsero) vaccine were administered over the two years.
  • 97% of students received two doses of Men B vaccine.
  • 88% of students completed the study.
  • No study participants developed Meningococcal B disease. Students were protected from the Meningococcal B disease infection.
  • The number of Meningococcal B diseases cases in the adolescent age group has decreased since the study commenced in 2017
  • Your contribution has enabled successful completion of the biggest study of its kind in the world.
  • The study is already contributing to further research into Meningococcal disease and is informing global policy and awareness regarding Men B disease and the vaccine.

The Men B study continues with the School Leaver Project in 2019: We will be recruiting 4,000 individuals in 2019 who were enrolled as a Year 12 student in a South Australian High School in 2018 for a throat swab.

School Leaver Study 2019 – B Part of It

Year 12 South Australian students in 2018 who were enrolled in the high school study (B Part of It), have an opportunity to continue in the study and have another throat swab taken as part of the Men B School Leaver Study from 01 February 2019. Students who participated in the study in 2018 will receive a letter in the next few weeks providing further information. For any students who did NOT participate in the high school study there is an opportunity to participate in the School Leaver Study by presenting at the B Part of It stands at Orientation week (‘O’ Week) at the main campuses of: Flinders University, University of South Australia and The University of Adelaide. School leavers who opt to have a throat swab will be required to complete a brief questionnaire and a consent form. Participants will be reimbursed for their time with a $40.00 Coles Myer Voucher.  Further information regarding where students (2018 school leavers) can receive their swabs please visit the B Part of It website: http://www.bpartofit.com.au in early 2019 for swab locations.
