Oxfam Walk

Lexie Opray, Peer Year 2016

On the 7th of April, Emma Hedger, Bridie English, Neve Roseman and myself set the challenge to complete the 100km Oxfam Trailwalker, from Dandenong to Warburton.

Four of us finished in 28 hours and 50 minutes on the 8th of April. It was an exhausting yet fantastic experience as we knew we were helping others who were in a worse position than ourselves. As the Oxfam slogan says, 'doing it tough so others don't have to'.

Our team (World Challenge To Oxfam) managed to raise $2000 from a variety of ways. A raffle was held at the Kilvington World Fair with all profits going to Oxfam, as well as a fundraiser movie night with Dendy Brighton Cinemas. Donations from family and friends were greatly appreciated too.

We did some training before participating in the event itself, as walking is a different type of fitness to what we were used to. We visited the track and experienced a section at a time which helped us prepare for the real thing.

On a side note, we all thought it was great that current Kilvington staff member and past student Ms Karen Bryce and her team all attended Kilvington and both our teams completed the Trailwalker within very similar times. It was nice to see a familiar face on the track!

Fundraising for Fiji

Hannah Vass, Peer Year 2013

I recently went on a volunteer trip to do Health Promotion and Nutrition Education in Fiji.

The trip was run by a group called ACATA Trust and the volunteers were all students studying Nutrition and/or Dietetics at Monash University.

We worked with local medical students and visited schools and villages to do health screening and provide information on how people could prevent or manage chronic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. These conditions are major problems in Fiji so we were supporting the work of the Ministry of Health, who are under-resourced to reach everyone who needs help. We did some fundraising to be able to take over sports gear donations for a high school, buy medical supplies and run cooking classes for students.

It was a really amazing experience!

Judy Allen Award 2017

The prestigious Judy Allen Award is presented by Judy Allen to a member of the community each year who has made an outstanding contribution to the School, as did Judy over many years.  The Award recipient receives a framed certificate, and his or her name is included on the Honour Board in Dalton Hall.

Nominations are now open for the 2017 Judy Allen Award. To view the criteria click here and to download a nomination form click here. Email your nomination to duced@kilvington.vic.edu.au.

Last year’s worthy award winner was Lauren Matthews. Lauren is a former student and School Captain of Kilvington, who then went on to serve on the Alumni and the Kilvington Board of Directors for nine years.

She has committed many hours representing the Alumni on the Board, as well as being an integral Board member during a critical period of time when the School Board was making the decision to become co-educational. She was the interim Chair of the Kilvington Board post-transition to co-educational Kilvington.

She has been an active supporter of the School and attended School events, fostered community ties with Kilvington, mentored students and enabled a number of progressive initiatives. She has consistently gone above and beyond in all of her Kilvington roles and brought considerable caring and social conscience to her Kilvington work.
