Mentor Program in Action

What on earth am I going to study at University next year? This is an inescapable question that almost all Kilvington Alumni faced at an earlier point in their education and a question on the mind of every student studying Year 12 at Kilvington this year. We try to delay the decision, put off university course research until we ‘have more time’ or simply avoid it altogether. But it is a question that has to be addressed.
With the understanding that it is a difficult and daunting task for a 17-or 18-year-old to choose a course and later career on their own, the 2017 Kilvington Student Leadership Team thought they would try and make the process a little easier. This gave birth to Kilvington’s first series of Career Panel Workshops, held during school time to better inform students about the world of possibilities that lies ahead of them.
On 16 May, the first of two workshops was held. Years 11 and 12 students were treated to a panel discussion between notable industry professionals, including Special Counsel at Thomson Greer Lawyers, Jason Quah, and freelance journalist, Cheryl Critchley. A business-only panel was held separately to appeal specifically to students interested in pursuing commerce. Both discussions were thought-provoking, with students posing questions to these professionals about their career pathways, and asking their advice for success in a highly competitive job market.
The next workshop held on 30 May saw a range of speakers including Distinguished Professor at Swinburne University, Karl Glazebrook, and Project Manager at Boeing and Board Member, Sarah McSwiney.
The Student Leadership Team is very thankful for the support from Kilvington’s Alumni and industry professionals, for without their assistance none of this would have been possible.
Becoming involved with the Kilvington Mentor Program is a highly valued and beneficial way of giving back to the community. We strongly suggest that all interested Alumni consider mentoring as an opportunity to make an important contribution to the development and careers of the next generation of Kilvington students.

Kilvington Students on ABC's Q&A
In July this year, a number of Kilvington's Senior School students had the opportunity to be members of an all-student audience to participate in a program dedicated to 'What if Australian High School Students Ran the Country'.
The calibre of young people and their level of engagement was outstanding and we can look forward to any one of them running the country in the not to distant future!
