Talent Shines at Rock Showcase

On Tuesday, 15 October the school rock bands performed in front of friends and family at the annual Rock Showcase.

This was a culmination of all the hard work the students in the bands had done throughout the year.

The evening began with “Fluffy Friends”, our junior band who were performing in their first showcase. Their band consists of Year 7s: Jasmine Drakopoulos, Stephanie Grivas and Menuli Peiris on vocals and guitarist Livinia Andriopoulos; Year 8s: keyboard player Kayla Glawitsch and drummer Austin Tamepo-Lee; Year 9s:  guitarist/singer Al O’Leary and bass player Zach Miekl; and Year 10 bass player Oscar Purnell.

They performed three tunes: Stitches by Shawn Mendes, Boulevard of Broken Dreams by Green Day and Eye Of The Tiger by Survivor. All three tunes were played with great energy and were very well received by the audience.

Next we had a surprise act put together by three of the “Fluffy Friends” band members Al, Oscar and Austin. They performed Smoko by the Chats which was a lot of fun and saw Austin debut as a singer from behind the drum kit.

To finish the night, our senior band (who still can’t decide on a name) performed an outstanding set of five songs which included This Love by Maroon 5, Locked Out Of Heaven by Bruno Mars, House Of Memories by Panic At The Disco and Faith from the Sing soundtrack by Stevie Wonder and Ariana Grande.

They were all fabulous performances however the highlight of the night was their final song, Somebody To Love by Queen. It featured five-part harmonies sung by Elina Jayamanna in Year 9, Vanessa Lezama Rivas in Year 8, Gabby Milonas in Year 10, Jess Richie in Year 10 and Nanki Singh in Year 9. All the instrumentation was played live including the guitar solo by Ethan Jayamanna in Year 10.

The other band members are Bernard Chin of Year 10 on guitar, Kelly Ng of Year 9 on keyboard, George Cook of Year 10 on bass,  and Jordan Barker of Year 11 on drums.

A big thank you to Ryan Wilson and Zach Meikl for their sound tech skills and Day Richards-Thacker for videoing and taking photos on the night. Thanks also to Eva McMaster, Belinda McGee and Wendy Howes for attending, and all the family and friends who gave up their valuable evenings to support an amazing night of music.

Congratulations to all the fantastic performers and I’m sure you’ll be booked for many assemblies and presentation nights during the rest of Term 4. Well done!
